Interesting #boulders in a roughly stacked #seawall
The southern part of the spit separating #Plymouth Harbor from Plymouth Bay has a seawall along the outer shore, above Plymouth #LongBeach. Without knowing where they came from, interpreting the boulders is sketchy. BUT nice coarse crystals in intrusions into #felsic rocks, including big #quartz chunks (top right photo) and blades of #biotite (bottom right).

#quartz is nice and I'm glad for crystal derived time, but I voted #cinnabar. Quartz is omnipresent, but the trip with single digit aged me and my dad and the guide to Obermoschel was unique. I'm working with quartz for clock signals, have some nice oscillators (Rb Controlled, heated) but my picture shows an old russian low frequency quartz bar I'm didn't come around to use yet. #mincup23 #teamquartz

I typically stan #quartz for MinCup but this year I'm #TeamCinnabar #MinCup23 !

@NadWGab #Cinnabar has the exact same symmetry as #quartz ! They are both trigonal with space group 3(1) 2 1 ( @MineralCup cleverness)
They both lack a center of inversion, and they are both piezoelectric.
One could imagine a heavy-metal tolerant species sporting cinnabar-resonator timepieces.

You know those sliced agate geodes you sometimes see in stores and on display?

Did you know you can "read" them?

Look carefully at the levels, banding, crystal habit and orientation, and you can work out how it formed.

#Quartz can have a multitude of colors ranging from crystal clear to dark brown. It is one of the most common minerals on Earth. Many varieties like rose #quartz or tiger eye are used as gemstones.

It may sound like that I'm in the pocket of Big Timepiece, but #Cinnabar just looks so delicious but it can't be eaten, but #Quartz has been in a lot of 1980's era TV commercials, so the quite absolutely possibly tasty reddish mineral thing we can't eat can't get my vote.

While I have plenty of various #quartz specimens in my rock collection, I'm playing for chaos this year. The type of chaos that says "this is fun" as it grinds some lush red pigment... made from #cinnabar. Everything's more fun with a touch of mercury, and toxic for it - including painting! #MinCup23
