Now that it's finally snowed, I'll be pulling on some snowshoes for the first time next week😃 If you're near Montreal this is a great place - https://cefseguin.com/en/raquette/

A boy and his dog😍
One of my favourite postcards in my personal collection shows a country boy and his working dog from rural Quebec (probably the Gaspe region). I love the close-up of the dog harness and the dog cart as well as the two planks that serve as a bridge over the roadside ditch.

Carpenters in their dog carts ready for work - from my collection of vintage postcards of Working Dogs of Quebec - a rather niche topic, I imagine 😃

[1/5] Growing up in Quebec in the ‘50s it was still common to see images of Father Time at New Year's. Out of curiosity, I looked him up and I’d like to share these historic images which are all drawn from Quebec periodicals.
This first is a winged Father Time from 1901 holding an hourglass, by the well-known Quebec artist Edmond-Joseph Massicotte. Source: BANQ

This is St. Nicholas (although I think he looks more like an elf) by wood engraver John Henry Walker.
Walker was Irish and immigrated to Montreal in the 1820s. His illustrations appeared in many of Quebec's periodicals in the 19th century but he struggled to have his prints or wood engravings taken seriously as "art".

This old-fashioned Santa Claus with a toboggan on his back and snowshoes on his feet is drawn from the Christmas 1894 issue of the Montreal Illustrated.
Christmas is a great time to remember that snowshoes and the toboggan were first developed by First Nations peoples. Without these gifts, the first settlers would have struggled even more to overcome Canada’s harsh winters.

This horse and sleigh “distributing the Christmas mail in Montreal” is from the weekly Montreal Standard (1905-1951).
It reminds me of my father's memories growing up in Montreal's poor Point St. Charles district in the '20s and '30s. He used to reminisce about how he would run along behind a horse drawn cart grabbing any pieces of coal that might fall off of the back.

Here's a cheerful Christmas illustration!
Father Time (with a scythe a la Grim Reaper) greets Santa Claus who's accompanied by children from around the world.
It's from Quebec's "Le Monde illustré" (1893) and the caption says "Le bonhomme Le Temps souhaitant la bienvenue à Santa Claus et à la nouvelle Année".

This is the one cent stamp that was on the back of the Lipton's Tea Advertising Card that I discussed above.
This one cent Canada postage stamp commemorated The 300th Anniversary of Quebec (1608 - 1908). It depicts historical figures explorer Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain and has the notatioion "IIIe Centenaire de Quebec) at the foot.
