Talk about a real scum type of spam account. Fuck you, Adam.
Two weeks later, looking at the same stats.
A reminder that this only reflects people who have been active on #Tooters for more than 1 week. New account signups arenβt taken into consideration as they would inaccurately inflate these numbers.
Daily active decreased 5%, but weekly active increased by 6%.
22% are active daily
82% are active weekly
There are now 49 countries represented by community members. π
#Tooters.org allows for open registrations just like mastodon.social, and spam is an ever present issue I deal with on nearly a daily basis. Iβve kept registrations open because I prefer for new people to be able to onboard immediately.
Automated account creation was the easiest part for me to mitigate by blocking these commonly used email domains:
qq.com
139.com
sina.com
In the last week I can see more than 1,100 signup attempts which were blocked from just those three.
Two weeks later, looking at the same stats. I didnβt specifically make note of it last time, but this only reflects people who have been active on #Tooters for more than 1 week. New account signups arenβt taken into consideration as they would inaccurately inflate these numbers.
Daily active increased 2%, but weekly active decreased by 9%.
27% are active daily
76% are active weekly
There are now 46 countries represented. π
I canβt be the only one whose heart stops beating entirely when deploying to production for a massive cluster of #Debian nodes, regardless of how certain I feel that everything is good.
Nope, no coffee for me. π¬π
Anyone who places βdealing with other adminsβ above moderation as being the most difficult part of managing a fediverse community is obviously on the wrong side of that fence.

Blocking email domains has become my new best friend in terms of being able to thwart spam accounts. Since adding qq.com (π¨π³) it has prevented 157 signup attempts in the last 3 days.
Hey there @trumpet Iβve had to disable new account signups from provincial China due to a consistent flood of accounts who sign up and do nothing more than follow the account `juzi @ mas.to`.
To date the number of accounts created which have done so is 428. I would guess a majority of the accounts following that one are likely bots. Not seeking action necessarily, but wanted to make you aware.
Remember this toot?
Placing a cap on the community size of #Tooters will not only be below 1,500, it will be below 1,000. Like I said, I will learn as I go what the best number is, and Iβve already adapted my thinking. Registrations will close before too long from now, and then I will allow existing community members to invite others to fill in the remaining allotment.
The IP address 123.144.250.51 has been blocked by #Tooters for automated account creation.
Iβm seeing a flood of account signups the last two hours, all from different IP addresses, but all are located in Zhengzhou, Henan, China π¨π³
Will update this thread as I learn more, but keep an eye on new accounts.
The account `@duckduckgpt` has been restricted to a limited setting. This means posts from this account will not appear in the public timelines of #Tooters. You can still choose to follow the account.
Lol @theropologist is out here following back the spam bots quicker than I can suspend them. π
Some interesting stats about #Tooters community members:
25% are active daily
85% are active weekly
There are now 41 countries represented. π
I reached tcp/udp yβall! ππ¨π»βπ»
If you step in π© donβt proceed to lick your shoe afterwards. Seems to be a growing trend on here.
The steps to running a fediverse instance in many cases:
1. Choose a domain name with the most expensive annual renewal price you can find.
2. Operate the instance for 364 days.
Lol.
If I recommend repeatedly that you migrate away from your current instance because youβve complained they donβt defederate from dark fedi, and you donβt, then I donβt want to see you complain about how your federated timeline is filled with hate that you personally βcanβt stay on top of domain blocks forββ¦just sayinβ. π―
Goodbye spam bot, I feel like we hardly had a chance to get to know one otherβ¦next time buy me a drink first.
