OH LORDY. Months ago I told our Gender working group at work that I'd be happy to do a presentation on #queertheory/#queerstudies, and now I actually have to do it. Not only do I feel profoundly unqualified but.. how do you concisely explain a field that is a mess.. on purpose and by definition?? Oh and we'll be exploring how to practically apply these thinkers in the elections and democracy space so easy peasy.

"A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture". This is the only non-fiction on my list. I consider this a must read. It's cutting, it's well-documented, it taught me so much and changed the way I related to my aroaceness completely. Cannot recommend enough.

I'm not an expert in Queer Theory, but from what little I know, I'd say:

3. There's a phenomenon called "homonationalism," which occurs when the quest for LGBTQ+ equality is framed as a quest to participate equally in the institutions of the nation-state. In doing so, the struggle for LGBTQ+ equality gets appropriated to validate state violence, e.g., "gay people are just as good as straight in working for the cops."

Notably, this occurs for every population of marginalized groups - Black capitalism is another example of equality struggles perpetuating oppression.
