Für den Heimweg könnt ihr euch gerne zu Gruppen zusammenfinden, einzelne von unserem Orga Team fahren zeitnah nach der Parade zum Ausladen zurück, dort könnt ihr euch auch anschließen. Today in 1985 on this popular daytime talk show, Steve Shlomo Ashkinazy of the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth (now the Hetrick-Martin Institute), playwright/activist Larry Kramer, and others discussed New York City's newly opened Harvey Milk High School, a small school created for kids who had dropped out of other schools due to homophobic violence or harassment.

DAWSON'S CREEK: "True Love" - 5/24/2000, WB

Gay teen Jack McPhee was almost the only gay-boy regular role on TV then, so he meant a lot to some young viewers who were coming out.

Sadly the handling of his story was one cop-out after another, for fear of alienating the advertisers that commercial TV depended on. So it was no surprise that in this episode, when the WB network finally let Jack kiss a guy, it was someone no longer interested in him, who he had been scarcely allowed to touch back when they were dating.

Network execs in the 1990s-2000s were sometimes willing to pinch their noses and allow a same-sex kiss as long as the characters were not mutually interested in each other.

In its 6 seasons this series never handled Jack's personal life with anything like the directness with which it depicted heterosexual romances. It was all tragically distanced, apologetic, cowardly. youtu.be/y3K_lTBKCLU

NIGHTLINE: Talking with Gay Teenagers - 5/23/2002, ABC

In 2002, as part of a weeklong series of broadcasts "about gay life in America," Ted Koppel talks with lesbian and gay teens who all live in the same Bible Belt town (Roanoke, Virginia) about the challenges of being young and gay in the early 2000s.

The show was produced in 2001, about 5 years after home internet access started to become common. As a result, queer teens in much of the country were slowly becoming less isolated from each other and from positive information. However, the fundamentalist Christian families some of these kids came from might not have allowed the internet in the house yet, amid frantic sermons and articles about the evils of the Web.

The show was originally scheduled to air in October 2001, but was bumped to 2002 by ongoing coverage of issues related to the 9/11 attacks.

HEARTSTOPPER: Season 1 - 4/22/2022, Netflix

The lovely teen-romance series HEARTSTOPPER was released on this date in 2022. I binged it in two days, sporadically exclaiming "Oh my God, this is so damn *cute*!" Really sweet.

I love the writing, the directing, the acting, the tone, and the casual mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and straight-cisgender teen characters who are close friends. Given that I got into studying media representation of LGBTQ+ characters specifically because of the impact of media images on queer teens in the 1980s and 1990s, the fact that such shows can now exist is something I really appreciate and celebrate.

A few viewers I know found it *too* sweet and longed for some grimmer elements for balance. They haven't read the graphic novels and don't realize season 1 was just the set-up of a more complicated story.
