@HartleyJames
Check books & online market sites to find who are accepting new authors IN YOUR GENRE. You want to have an agent who matches your genre, if possible. They are more likely to accept you as a client.

Also, submit any manuscripts to them w/ the same attn to guidelines and I mentioned in my other toot. If they say they only work w/ mysteries, and you send them a sci-fi vampire romance, you wasted their time-- and yours.

Anybody feel like reviewing at each other's ? I'm an absolute noob at them, but I'm a good editor/reviser in general, and I think I need "stranger's eyes" on mine, people who haven't read the book.

@benetnasch @steaphan in my writing group, three of us have novels we are querying and we wrote pitches and for each other. So each of us got two pitches and two query letters. I ended up using quite a bit of material from those letters. It was incredibly helpful. I think the trick is to have people who have not only read your novel, but also know you well enough to understand your intentions. Which is probably where blurb services fail.

Okay, I *think* I've figured out the sequence of sections in , and the two major varieties of them.

This seems to be standard:

Intro (title, genre, audience, word count)
Pitch (logline, premise, MC description, setting, conflict)
Comps
Bio
Sign-off

OR the Query Shark method:

Pitch
Details & Comps
Bio
Signoff

I have written my first ! I *think* it’s pretty good? It has all the info it’s supposed to—length, genre, audience, leads, plot, setting, bio—and I’ve snuck* some flavour from the book in there so that it’s professional but also fun. I’m going to show it around to other people, of course.

Does anyone know of quality outfits that will look at and give tips? I assume someone’s selling that service.

You don't have to self-publish to get in print. You don't have to pay ANY money--to editors, artists, or printers. Getting traditional publishers to publish your book for FREE is not as impossible as it might seem.

I worked for many years in . We published some truly crappy , just because they had a great query; whereas other, more talented writers, did not.

Most of my current was workshopped chapter by chapter & w/ the and the . Now I"m not only workshopping with 3 Nameless fellows, but since we all read each others MS, we are writing drafts for each other as a start.
All this is to say, I feel having a strong is essential to this process. I couldn't do it without them.
Let's build a solid one here on .
