Instagram - Damon Young on Instagram: "Saturday afternoon reading: THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM, by Liu Cixin. Picture a disgraced Chinese physicist, who’s the daughter of a disgraced Chinese physicist. Communist China has ruined her family. Her one chance at redemption: working at a secret radio telescope, built to detect and contact alien life before the USA or USSR. She receives a message from space. The message is: don’t reply. She replies. What follows is a romp—yes, for all its seriousness, this is a romp—that explores both scientific problems and the basic existential outlooks of various moralities: hope, despair, hate. Liu’s depiction of Red Army conflict and extremism is powerful, as is his speculative vision. He imagines extraterrestrial life with great bravado, but enough familiarity to make it dramatically meaningful. And goodness, the science. This is the most boldly “science” science-fiction I’ve read in years. It’s not difficult, but it’s precise and systematic and all narratively relevant. Good stuff. The novel can be a little too heavy of explanation at times. It’s neither subtle nor allusive. But Liu makes some wonderful parallels between humans and aliens, and his characterisation is consistent and sometimes very moving. The beginning works well to put us in a rich social milieu before we turn to the abstractions of physics. Overall, this is a rare beast: a page-turner about astrophysics and ethics. As always, I can’t speak to Ken Liu’s translation. But Ken’s a brilliant author in his own right, and the novel reads very easily. #scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookish #books #reading #readingtime #shelfie #space #spacetravel #dybooksof2022 #novel #specfic #speculativefiction #cixinliu #liucixin #alienlife #philosophicalfiction #threebodyproblem #thethreebodyproblem"
