🧵 For those who would like to know how to prepare a quilt top, for hand quilting:
1. Lay the slightly larger backing fabric, wrong side up, on a flat surface & secure with painters tape (📷 2)
2. Add the batting layer, pinning it to the backing (📷 3)
3. Lay the fully pressed quilt top, on top, and baste in place, with long basting stitches (📷 1)

When I need to change direction, while blanket stitching around an edge - at an inside corner or point – I take 3 stitches.
One to the left, one at the turn and one to the right. Each going into the same place.
This example shows both versions. 😊🪡🧵

If the back of a fabric is a better option, for what you’re making – there’s no law says you can’t use it that way! 😁🥰💛

📍When I need a larger ruler than I have, to cut fabric, I use painters tape, to temporarily join two smaller rulers together.

📍Though it’s called a seam ripper, I’ve found the quickest & cleanest way to use it, is to cut the stitches, that you want to remove, every fourth or fifth stitch, all the way across.
Then flip it over to pull the whole back thread out - easy, peasy!
No distorting the fabric!! 👏🥰

As you likely know — I love hand stitching & quilting by hand. 🪡🧵
Whenever I post anything about these, I always get many questions.
If I can figure out the technical, is there any interest is ‘watching’ me do some?

No promises, but I am curious. 🤔

When your thread gets short, during hand stitching, with just a bit of stitching left to do — Put your needle ‘through’ the thread close to the end (📷 1) and pull it through, to make a little knot at the eye of the needle (📷 2).
This locks the thread to the needle, for the last few stitches. 😊👏

Thanks to my friend Sue for reminding me about this great tip, we learnt from Hilda! 🥰😘

I am using the blanket stitch, in matching embroidery floss, to quilt around the shapes of the wedding signature keepsake, I’m currently working on – I love how it adds to the design! 🤩👏

My tip: Make the height of the stitch and the space between stitches the same.
In this case they’re 1/8”.

* Pull the thread, with a light tug, pulling the knot through the fabric. This will bury the knot between the layers.
* Cut the thread and bury the end, by slightly pulling up the backing fabric.

I was recently asked to share how to bury knots, when hand quilting. 🪡
You basically pull the knot through the backing fabric.
Here’s how to knot off:
* Bring your last stitch out to the back of the quilt.
* Make a knot, in the thread, just further than one stitch length away from the end (see arrow).
* Insert the needle, one stitch length away. Into the backing and batting only, and come back out 3/4” away.

📍Painters tape (1”) is most useful, for marking straight lines, when hand quilting!

I also use it to hang quilt blocks, on a window, when tracing a design onto the background.
And of course, the sticky side, tapped over a quilt surface, catches all the loose threads & furbaby hairs, too. 👏🥰

I was finally able to get the Tulips signature wedding keepsake wall hanging basted – so hand quilting can begin! 👏🥰

For basting, I keep a large spool of white cotton thread, in the repurposed tin.
I punched a hole in the lid, to string the thread through. 😊

The backing fabric reminded me of rows of tulips, which made it perfect!! 🤩

📍My pretty printable row/column markers, fit perfectly in a repurposed pin box. 🥰👏
(The link to them is on main page of Victoriana Quilt Designs website).

They’re a great tool for keeping track of quilt patches & units. ⭐️🧵

📍The eye of a hand sewing needle is larger on one side, than the other.
If you have trouble threading your needle, try turning it around. 🪡🧵

📍Adding a label, to the back of the quilts you make, is a great way to allow people in the future, know the history of your creations!

🎁👏 I offer a bunch of free printable labels, on my website, if you’re looking for a place to start!
