Quote toots / quote boosts / quote posts do exist for Akkoma users in the fediverse (shared social media space for Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, and other ActivityPub platforms that I'm posting in right now) and they look very good in the android FediLab app.

Saw a garbage toot. (A really self serving BS toot. Oh man.)

Took a screenshot.

Worked up the alt text.

Wrote a snarky comment. (Their toot was stupendously, galactically dumb. I used both barrels.)

…

Then I deleted it.

If we do have to have quote toots they need to take at least that many steps to accomplish.

I didn’t think so before but I was stupid then & I’m enlightened now.

@burningtarot It's a whole thing. They did not implement what on twitter was known as a quote tweet because although it's often, maybe even usually, used in a benign & helpful way, it could also be used in a way that instigated pile-ons, shaming, & abuse. It's possible to share a link to a mastodon post and comment in your post about the link, or screenshot it & share it, but I have seen one person ask someone not to do that with their posts, so idk. My hot take on the missing #QuoteTweet #QUOTE_TOOT feature in #mastodon

I think QT is used to boost engagement and drive virality. So I dont miss its absence in mastodon which is not centred on boosting engagement numbers above all else.

What I do miss is the hierarchical/tree structure of replies in twitter.
The flat structure of replies in mastodon makes it very difficult to follow the different conversations that are happening

Entiendo que por el abuso, se limite, pero si de abuso se trata hay muchas maneras de abusar, incluso sin usar citas. Y teniendo mastodon 4 niveles de publicitar un toot (público, unlisted, followers y direct), ¿no sería deseable usar esta capacidad para regular que toots pueden ser citados o no?

La capacidad expresiva de una cita bien usada es maravillosa, te permite insertarte en la conversación de otros o bien insertarlos a ellos en la tuya.
