Have #replies suddenly become #QuoteBoosts on #Mastodon? 🤷🏽♂️
#Mastodon #quoteboosts #replies
Inspired by a #suggestion re: #QuoteBoosts that came across my feed, I think making it so a reply to a boost adds the booster's @ would be a great way to improve ties between people without derailing/fracturing conversations. I am still not sold on the benefit of quote boosting but would certainly love to know if people who follow me interact with the things I boost and to have the opportunity to join in. @gargron
If we had #QuoteBoosts this wouldn't be a rickroll.

Me: *moves from Twitter to Mastodon*
Me: It's nice to be on a service that isn't controlled by the whims of one guy with no accountability.
Eugen: "I don't feel as strongly about quote posts as I did", [so they're probably going to happen here]
Me: How disillusioning. ☹
Seems like a dream of many #Fedizens, including me, might finally come true: Eugen is considering to add opt-out #QuoteBoosts to #Mastodon!
Another feature I've also been advocating for is now in planning too: Disabling or limiting replies!
These developments would significantly strengthen the users' choices of whom they want to interact with, while still not lacking popular features known from many other social media services.

Compromise is usually the best course of action. #QuoteBoosts
I don’t really care to wade into the #QuoteBoosts discourse, but I honestly don’t understand the difference between a so call first class Quote Boost and a client embedding pretty much any link (in this case a mastodon link) included in a toot.
Thinking about #QuoteBoosts...
I just quote-boosted someone's post, as I thought that my followers might be interested in the original post, and interested in my thoughts on the original post.
I deleted my quote-boost, and instead redrafted my thoughts as a response to the original post.
Why?
1. There was no room left for me to tag the original post's author. I wouldn't want them to *not* know I'd quoted them.
2. I was disagreeing with much of what was originally posted. It felt snarky.

This thread by @Quinnae_Moon, who's been actually researching social media platform "affordances" (what you can do with an item or feature), is real, solid *DATA* for the QTs debate.
The TL;DR is that while QTs do have positive uses, the negatives very likely outweigh them.
But the whole thing's worth reading.

Great, I am being quoted now, and because it's patched functionality I can't actually reply to ask the person not to do that.
The absolute spirit of twitter.
I am going to block anyone who quote boosts me without interacting with me first. I don't care how well intentioned you are, its intrusive and the intrusion is made infinitely worse by not being able to reply.
*sigh* My instance admin opposes switching off of vanilla Mastodon, which is of course totally allowed. But the time has come for me to use my VPS for something and self-host. I want to quote toot. With choices in alphabetical order, should I run:
#Poll #SelfHosted #SelfHosting #QuoteBoost #QuoteBoosts #QuoteToot #QuoteToots
#poll #selfhosted #selfhosting #quoteboost #quoteboosts #quotetoot #QuoteToots
I'm heavily committed to using #QuoteBoosts / #QuoteTweets, for reasons I've already tooted.
But I think my side of the argument has to step up and talk about #ThrottlingHarrassment if QB/QT's are implemented.
Some suggestions:
1. Present and retroactive limitations on WHO can QB a post, as currently discussed on GitHub: https://mastodon.online/@Carwil/109570522623710533
https://spore.social/@hipquark/109567834991512570
2. A slider to disable "Show quote boosts" in timelines.
3. Automatic alerts to mods & admins for viral pile-ons.

I can understand that some people want to see #quoteBoosts in Mastodon and certainly it's fine to advocate for it. But it feels a bit strange that the discussion mostly ignores the fact that you have options within the Fediverse to make quote Boosts and see them when others make them. For instance with #Misskey. So basically, the discussion is not about you being able to use/see them, but about the demand that everyone else on Mastodon receives them in a certain way. 1/2
I didn’t mind it’s absence at first, but now I’m starting to think quote-boosting might improve the Mastodon experience. Without that added context, and with boosting being so important, my timeline here often feels like a random succession of boosts. Knowing why someone I followed wanted to boost a particular post would add to my sense of interaction with them, and would lead to discussion. What do you think?
#quoteboost #quoteboosts #quoteboosting #qt
I know I’ve said too much about #qt and #quotetoots already but want to say I’m not digging the use of the terms consensual and non consensual in the discussion. There is (for me anyway) an obvious call back to the historical use of emotive language about white womanhood as a weapon of violence and oppression that seems very poorly judged. Mutual agreement can, I believe be achieved by tools to opt in. #Quoteboosts
I've had several replies explaining to me (and sometimes 'splaining to me) that some federation software already allows QTing that federates fine to other software.
But also, I've received at least one reply attempting to demonstrate how well it works, and... it breaks. :D
So I posted it as an issue on the Github issue list, and found out that what's happening with QTs from other softwares are not federating correctly, dare I say exactly as I predicted? :D https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22719#issuecomment-1364544063
Anyway, if you think QTs should be a thing on Mastodon, you can put it here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/309

P.S. A great list of positive uses for #QuoteBoosts / #QuoteTweets is here.
(for one, you could read the beginnig of that text right now if they were enabled)
