What am I missing WRT the #QuotePost on #Mastodon debate? What, good or bad, can a QT do that a link or boost-and-reply can't?

Sure, Masto sucks at showing replies, but *your* followers would see *your* posts with links, and unless they/their instance blocked OP, your boosts and replies too.

Yet all of fedi has extremely strong opinions on this. Surely it's me and not the rest of the choir that's off-key?

Considering how critical #Hashtag are to discoverability on Mastodon, I can't help but think one of the greatest uses of #QuotePost would be simply enabling users to append new hashtags to existing posts to help with discoverability.

And then that makes me kind of realize that a lot of the reluctance towards quotes is for the same reason: for a certain user base, discoverability is an anti-feature. Any feature that enables users to find each other, also enables users to target each other

Und jetzt frag ich mich, ob so Features wie #QuotePost / Drükos (z.B. mit Opt-out) oder allgemeine Suche hier nicht doch auch gut wären? (Ja ich weiß, gibt's teilweise schon, aber ja auch Leute, die explizit dagegen sind). Und man das Risiko des Ausnutzens nicht anders bekämpfen könnte?

Denn das mit der #Vernetzung ist hier im #Fediverse echt ein Problem, ich tue mir echt schwer damit, Accounts von Kontinenten außerhalb Europas/Nordamerikas zu finden, also wenn ihr Accounts aus Mittel-, Südamerika, Afrika, Asien, Australien, Ozeanien kennt, die auf englisch, spanisch oder französisch schreiben, freu ich mich über Empfehlungen, da ist mir auch die thematische Ausrichtung eher egal (halt bitte keine politisch rechten Leute), denn Hauptsache, ich kenn da mal ein paar Accounts, über die ich dann mehr Leute finden kann..

The rich quote or truncated quote post is displayed for everyone the same way by appending `public_follow=true|false` to the quoted post url.
The intent of showing a quote post truncated is to discourage the dogpile effect of quote posting.

Today I've seen posts in my timeline claiming that a #quotepost feature would be the worst that could happen to #Mastodon. Also, I've seen posts claiming that the current lack of a quote post feature is the worst thing about Mastodon.

Both conversations quickly devolved, with people on both sides arguing that the other is "doing it wrong" or outright accusing them of all kinds of misbehavior.

Makes me think that maybe (the lack of) quote posts isn't the actual problem?

Sponsoring a developer bounty (or pay hourly rate) to the first person that creates a tenable Quote Post patch for Mastodon.

I'll start the bounty/funding at $500 (USD - would like to fundraise more - see link below). The code must be based on Mastodon mainline (current main branch) and be a PR any instance can apply while @Gargron reviews it for inclusion on Mastodon.

* Quote Post/Boost
* Adhere to post permissions (no quoting an unlisted post as public so on and so forth)
* Adjust Format Quote post in way that we can listen to community and pivot on top or bottom quote (parameter in .env.properties perhaps?)
* Optional notification of being quoted? (Is this doable? /desired?)

If Eugen is already secretly working on this, funding will be donated to support the upstream project.

Is there a good fediverse server that has implemented quote boosts/quote posts in a sensible manner? A fork of mastodon would be ideal as it will be easier to migrate to it, but I'm okay with trying something else.

I'm getting tired of waiting for #mastodon to add this feature, so will migrate to something that already has it.

QPs are uniquely suited to the horny parts of social media. Kink posting is all about getting your imagination going, so QPs are a medium suited to sharing how what other people's posts inspire.

Since attribution is built in, it doesn't have the scummy feel of, say, endlessly resharing #HouseOfGord images with short stories photoshopped into the margins. (Don't make faces at Tumblr, Reddit. We all know you do it too.)

@timeline_tester NB: this #QuotePost implementation / workaround adopted by new iOS apps like #IceCubesApp and #MonaApp, is incompatible with the existing implementation used by #Misskey and #Pleroma.

Conversely, their implementation isn’t currently supported by Mastodon apps afaik, e.g. : https://misskey.de/notes/998cizf4bx

Only #Friendica supports both iirc. 👏

(Not sure on the state of this issue on android apps, in particular in #Fedilab.)
