Many critics of #QuotePosting are offering alternatives that make this polemical technique unnecessary, or so they think Some of these alternatives do have merit and I am Boosting them to show good will; I want everyone to know that I'm one quote poster who wants to use it for balanced debate. But can our access to one to one dialogue by checking out our posts and replies do the same thing as quote posts? Not quite. Those who think it does don't appreciate how they can be used positively.
Was ich hoffe…). Ich will sowas nicht haben. #drüko #quoteposting
Waarom willen mensen zo graag het laatste woord hebben, en wat heeft dat te maken met 'quote posting'?

@Gargron I would wait and reassess if/when the journalist class decides whether they’re really going to stay on mastodon, or if they’re just sheltering here until the weather at twitter quiets down. Anecdotal data, but I only ever see journalist expats whining about not having it, while the couple that I’ve seen who have really moved in to stay (making new friends, connections outside of other twitter expats, self hosting even) don’t seem to “need” it so badly. #QuotePosting
The sad truth about implementing #QuotePosting in #Mastodon is that its very FIRST use will certainly be someone abusing it to dunk on a post enumerating the legitimately good reasons for implementing quote posting 😪

I do believe QTs enhance communication in multiple ways; however, I've been reading posts of people who are vehemently against them.
I'm now even more in favor of quote posting on Mastodon as the loudest opposition are acting like entitled retirees, angry at the possibility of change and being assholes, especially if someone dares bring up that marginalized (especially Black) people are in favor of QTs.
You'd think someone stepped on their lawn.

@taylorlorenz 🤷🏻♀️ Instead of getting frustrated just try to relax sometimes a little and and try to read/understand why some people react in a certain way you do not like. As for me when I read your post about quote posting it sounds all very (and sometimes even extremely) pushing and demanding 🤷🏻♀️ I guess that’s what many people don’t like. You can do of course suggestions but for the rest Just take and enjoy your new environment as it is 😉 #QuotePosting #Mastodon #Relax

When people ask for the ability to quote posts _and_ the ability to edit posts, I think it shows their brains have been broken by using Twitter for years. For journalists — whose job it is to care about historical accuracy of text they're reporting on — it's a sign they're being lazy or disingenuous, so shame on them for crying that they want to have their cake and eat it.
Truthiness matters. People on Twitter asked for years for the ability to edit tweets. Mastodon gave us the "Edit" button. Fantastic! This comes at the cost of negating the utility of quote-posting, since the author can see your quote and edit what they wrote. The reason to quote is to provide context. But, if that context is mutable then it diminishes our trust in the quote and thus removes its semantic value. (Sure, Mastodon shows if a toot as been edited and lets us see previous versions, but this is lost in a world of clickbait headlines and mainstream media articles that embed toots/tweets).
For the sake of clear communication and community safety, we shouldn't give abusers, haters, bad actors, *-phobes, scammers, gaslighters, liars (or all of the above; for convenience let's say "politicians") the ability to change what they said after they've been quoted.
Make a screenshot. The original author can't edit that.

What I tried to say here was this: You don't need a #quoteposting #feature baked into some #software (like if you use a client for a #Mastodon based server to access the #fediverse) to fall prey to the #perversion of indulging into #toxic circle jerking like the authors in this screenshot all do. And you also already can easily comment on toots without engaging (remember: „Don't feed the trolls!“) to for example publicly express your disgust in an ironic (or other non-toxic) way like I did here.

I don't have a dog im the quote post fight, but @dynamicsymmetry@wanderingshop offers as thoughtful a take as I've seen in a thread starting here: https://wandering.shop/@dynamicsymmetry/109565657609712407
Key point for me:
"I think so much of the friction in this whole argument is being informed by an understandable notion that blunt applications of code or lack thereof can somehow do the hard work of building and enforcing community norms for us, and it just really can’t."
#QuotePosting
Just an observation on the issue of #quoteposting I realize it does have its benefits, but #Mastodon appears to be geared more toward people talking to each other instead of talking about, or over, others. I’m an #introvert and engaging has always been a struggle for me. But it’s actually been a pleasant experience on this platform to type a post and get real, rational responses from human beings, even if we don’t agree on every point. I hope Mastodon keeps growing—but not by becoming Twitter.

I hope they rethink Quoted Posts. People are going to be shitty to each other or not, no matter what. But not having that ability to quote a post means we effectively can’t comment in a positive way either. I’m sure we’ll all work around it if it doesn’t change. Also, I could be wrong. #QuotePosting
Last thing I boosted is an important one. Somewhere it says “listen to your users” and it will be important if #mastodon ultimately wants to be successful.
And having seen some glorious quote tweeting again on #twitter the fact remains that #QuotePosting is essential for a platform like this
