I realize that there are reasons that Mastodon doesn't allow #QuoteTooting the way that Twitter has #QuoteTweeting.

That said, even after 9 months of using Mastodon almost exclusively, I still catch myself trying to quote toot something only to remember that (essentially) I can't.

We are against #quoteBoosting or #quoteTooting, or whatever. Fediverse grew in popularity because it was different. It was not a #timeSink either.

Not feeling the pressure to add to the conversation when sharing was a breath of fresh air for us, moving to fedi.

If I had one wish for Mastodon it would be replacing Boosts with Quote Toots.

Right now, boosting seems to be encouraged as a means of promoting a toot. I mostly don’t care for those viral toots, at all. I care for the opinions of people I follow.

Quote Toots would get me more of the latter, Boosts make me hit the „mute Boosts by Person X“ button more often, unfortunately.

Ok. Since #journalist Taylor Lorenz is now fighting to get devs to allow #quotetooting, I want to illustrate why NOT to allow it.

Here's the creator of #JohnMastodon quote tweeting on another tweet, who quote tweeted on another tweet - all mocking President Volodymyr Zelenskyj for not wearing a suit and mocking the last tweeter for mocking President Zelenskyj.

Last are quote tweets about #TaylorLorenz as a “media whore” and “cocaine bear”.

WHY would we want this on Mastodon? WHY?

sure, you can copy the link and repost it. that works if you wanna shove it into a public timeline

but if you're just trying to snark with your friends, you can **reply with their handles** to the subject toot and just set it to mentioned people only. (make sure you scrub out any handles you aren't trying to snark with)

About #quotetoots: will they be implemented? I mean, i get that they can be used for harassment. By qt'ing someone you disagree with on your own timeline with some mean comment you can use it to get your followers to dogpile on someone..

Bút: i miss using it to show something to my followers with an addition. Like 'hey, this person has a point, and i'd like to add this example/different view'.
More tumblr-style than twitter-style, if you will.

And it's not as if this is not possible, you can easily screenshot and share. But quotetoots would also tag the OP, which makes it more useful? The screenshot route (or copy/paste link to toot even, which atm for me doesn't prompt a preview of the toot?) is much more viable to be used to subtoot someone. Which opens it up to stealthy harrasment, which i don't think is better.

So, yeah, long story short, is a quotetooting option in the pipeline?
