#QuoteTweets were (and are) a major vector for angry #Misogynist / #Incel / #MRA (#AndrewTate anyone?) abuse heaped upon women by angry men using the #QT vector

If this abuse is not solved for correctly it will result in a major tactical and strategic error

An error that could alter #Mastodon's future

@wndlb Yeah. My recollection is that this is how it started on Twitter too.

At bare minimum, posting the URL of a #toot should appear as a rich link— like a link to a website of news article.

Better would be to build in #quotetoot functionality.

I like telling my audience: “hey, this thing below matters because X” and then letting them access the material/author directly. That’s what makes it #social. #QuoteTootsNow

I know there’s pushback on enabling #QuoteToots because of fear of abuse. But the policy against it is just silly: the reality is that right now you can #embed a #toot on every #website in the universe except for all the #Mastodon #instances.

Even #twitter. I mean #voldemort. I mean the #birdsite. 👇

I see lots of calls on here for my fellow #journalists to jump in the #Mastodon pool— and I think it’s exactly what should happen.

Some thoughts:

1) Boost and share #journalism and the people who make it… often.

2) Offer friendly, constructive feedback to help adapt posts to #Masto (eg: the heightened importance of #hashtags - thanks, #tooters!)

For now, I’m crossposting my toots to Twitter but it gets harder and harder to justify maintaining a presence there.
