Got rid of some relays (hard to pick which though, and #FOMO). But the load on my RPi became too much (regular OOMs or Mastodon unresponsive for a minute or so while #Sidekiq struggled) and my storage (#Cloudflare #R2) ballooned to ~190Gb… And 99.9% of the posts and media I would never even see.

Just tried migrating from Google #CloudStorage to #Cloudflare #R2 as Mastodon's S3 backend.

Unfortunately allowing public access to media requires either managing DNS through CF or being limited to a managed domain which is rate-limited and not intended for production use.

It's a shame because it would be much cheaper.

@markstos @opencollective It’s a valid concern! #r2 is cheap, but it’s by no means the only option out there. It’s also commoditized (s3) so providers can be easily switched. We also think by keeping a focused library of public content, storage costs can be more than sustainable!

Data durability is also very important, which is why we maintain backups, are joining the Open Collective Foundation, and operated as a collective of urbanism-related creators! (Check out our Matrix for more on that)

@markstos Great question! Storage is via #r2: costs are $15/tb/mo. Bandwidth is essentially free (just per-object read operations at $0.36 / million requests).

We're currently setting up @opencollective for completely transparent expenses and budgeting (opencollective.com/uv).

/me realises he set up IP whitelisting for the R2 API key... Only two IPs were allowed to upload content to R2...

I'm pretty impressed by the @Cloudflare #AWS S3 to #R2 migration service. It took me about 5 minutes to migrate 1,1k files of 15GB total, here's how it went.

I'd heard of other instances struggling with S3 as an expense so I elected for Wasabi. I was worried their bandwidth cap (cannot exceed amount of storage) would cause problems but with caching and me being a solo instance, I actually dealt with incredibly low bandwidth.

The main reason I switched was the minimum purchase on storage. If I believed I would regularly hit anywhere in the range of $5/month on R2 it wouldn't have been worth the switch.

Aus Interesse, wer betreibt noch seine Mastodon Instanz zusammen mit Cloudflare R2 und hat Erfahrungen zu den Kosten?

Cloudflare reports 2GB more usage than Mastodon... Has anybody built a tool to understand the discrepancy? would love to avoid writing it myself.

OTOH a lower hanging fruit is applying the patch to delete avatars and headers from the cache.

#MastoAdmin Moved media cache/etc. for my instance over to #Cloudflare #R2 yesterday, with a worker which also pulls anything still sitting on #S3 over as needed. 5GB in the R2 bucket now, and quite a bit of transactions. Image loading is noticeably faster for me. The move should eliminate the "Data Out" charges that were my primary cost at Amazon, but will see how the Cloudflare "operations cost" pencils out. #Mastodon
