Instead they broke from the world and reached stations in life reserved for a blessed few. Oftentimes the Sufism of today is shallow and empty, but the heroes of the past continue to inspire in the present, and act as beacons for the future. The story of Rabia al Adawiyya is a blessed reminder of what a true Sufi seeks from this life.

The Sufis of old had a sense of dedication, love and selflessness that is sorely lacking today. In those early years of success, when it was so easy to be enamoured by the temptations of the dunya [material world], there were some who rejected wealth, status, conventional expectations and material success.
