Another relic from my early OS X Server sysadmin days: my ATX Rackmount G4.

Our company needed a low-power, low cost Mac server with dual network interfaces. The Mac Mini was brand new on the block and USB ethernet adapters were flaky at best. So I decided to put a Sawtooth G4 motherboard into a modified 4U rackmount case and install OS X Server onto it.

A little bit janky, but it worked great at its intended application for years!

I don't remember, but I think the Apple Mac Pro (Intel) rackmount "kit" was a $599/$600 USD "upgrade" before.

So I guess they dropped it by $100 for the M2 Apple Silicon Mac Pro?

Wow, such savings. </sarcasm>

Maybe someday, Apple will figure out datacenter server sorts of useful things (e.g. hot swappable redundant power supplies) but 2023 is clearly not that day.

So #today I bought an old #rackmount #computer #server on ebay for the grand price of fifty quid.

In case you are in any way interested it's a 'HP DL320 G3' with 1U size.

I'm not sure it's truly #VintageComputing, do let me know.

When it arrives I guess I'll know how old it actually is, and I'd love to know what it cost new if there are any #HP fans out there.

Plan to pop #ubuntu on it and see if it can be of use, the start of my very own #datacenter.

I #selfhost web and email off of three different #VPS instances and—more than anything else—I want more RAM. I’ve got a #NUC in my closet with 16GB of RAM, but I don’t wanting to be #selfhosting off of residential broadband.

I’d love to buy my own #1U #rackmount server, ship it to a #colocation site, and have it hooked up to power and networking for $50–75 a month. #Dedicated hosting, but owning the server itself. I’m not sure this is possible, at the amount I can afford to pay.

First use of #RackStuds and not too happy. They're slimmer than they looked online making them seem more brittle.
One of the Duo studs broke when trying to fit it.
The DUO doesn't really fit all that well in the rack and I really wouldn't trust them to hold much of anything.

Testing with a #Cisco 1811. Wouldn't even consider these with something such as a Cisco 3560.
Online they were red, but black ones arrived.

I thought I was clever by adding a 1u keystone panel to my rack with USB and 3.5mm stereo audio keystone jacks to route the rear USB and audio jacks to the front. Now the keystone audio jacks have become super loss which makes listening with headphones nearly impossible, unless I keep my head perfectly stationary.

I need to figure out a reliable way to switch between the workstation and media PC audio or mix them, separate from any KVM switch so I can listen to the media PC while working on the workstation.

Очередной рековый восьмибитник нашел. Для всяких z80-8080 достаточно редкая компоновка, обычно компы этого уровня были одноплатными.

Называется Proton. Сделан немного через жопу, платы слишком маленького размера. На таком размере простой логикой-рассыпухой ничего толком реализовать не получится.

В описании гитхаба написано "хотелось сделать компьютер по технологии, доступной в 80х", и тут же CompactFlash и i2c.

Плюс используется трассировка проводами, накрутка. Это вообще технология 50-60х

Но выглядит "промышленно".

В советское время было два образчика подобной компоновки. Оба неудачные, оба в серию не пошли из-за монстроузности и сложности. "Микро-80", который считается первой персоналкой для самостоятельной сборки в СССР. Если память не изменяет, число корпусов микросхем было максимальным из всех советских ПК. И дефицитным.

"Ириша", проект Химфака МГУ, позиционировавшийся как будущий компьютер для школ (нет, не взлетело, тоже монстр, заточен был под опрос множества датчиков в исследовательской работе). Мне известен ОДИН оригинальный экземпляр тех времён, в таком же как на картинке корпусе.

Из импортный фан-проектов еще RC2014 можно вспомнить. Но он вообще позорный, "платы" размером в две микросхемы.
