Many nations are embracing as a energy generating technology. Meanwhile the massively expensive and as yet unsolved disposal problem of threatens all life forms over the long term. The current favoured solution is to bury the high and intermediate level wastes. are massively contaminated sites.

@roblosricos I remember when I went on a public tour of the (for publicity), and I asked the tour guide what was going to happen to the . He replied that I shouldn't worry about that, since a solution would be developed by the time that would be a problem. Yeaaaaah. Riiiiight. Even teenaged me new a bunch of BS when I heard it.

Making information public about the project – which includes not just a reactor but also new aquatic infrastructure in the Bay of Fundy and new radioactive storage – as well as testing the veracity of claims made about safety, risk and impacts will be difficult if not impossible without a federal Impact Assessment, which has so far been denied.

Residents of Ontario town pondering nuclear crypt take fully paid trip to Finland to see the potential future. The trip to Finland, although impressive, didn't change Wood's mind.
"It would change the entire character," he said. "There's a certain small-town quality of life that you have in a small-town area like Mildmay and South Bruce, and I don't think it will be there if they go ahead." | CBC News cbc.ca/news/canada/london/nucl

"Scientists call for coordinated global effort to assess the full environmental impacts of tritium

(...)
A radioactive isotope of hydrogen, tritium is a by-product of the nuclear industry and its presence is predicted to grow exponentially with nuclear increasingly seen as being key to the global low carbon economy.

That will result in many nations having to develop long-term strategies to manage tritiated radioactive waste and develop tools to both assess and address its environmental impact."

If you live in NY state, there’s an important bill in the Senate, S5181, prohibiting the discharge of radioactive substances into waters of the state.

nysenate.gov/legislation/bills

Please contact your state rep’s immediately! Holtec has told us they won’t give much notice when they dump 1M gallons of radioactive tritium into the Hudson River. 😱

@zionlights Doesn't harm anyone? at plants, those who manufacture, mine, process, store the highly from these plants are limited in the time they can spend interacting with it because of exposure. They are cycled out of service like dirty air filters and for decades have faced cancer deaths and been on the front lines to deal with small and large releases--most of which are not reported.

“Sweden makes regulatory push to allow new nuclear reactors” 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have strong doubts if building new are a smart decision. Building them requires 15 to 20 years and enormous amounts of money and produces Better, cheaper and faster would be spending all that money for including See link reuters.com/world/europe/swede

I have read the Forbes article. For me (and I expect many other engineers like me with an opinion) the disposal of is a political rather than a technical problem. After 300000 years spent fuel has the equivalent radioactivity as typical ore. Finding a geological setting likely to be stable for 300000 years is not especially challenging.

The cleanup costs of need not be unaffordable. The quantity of waste is small relative to the amount of energy produced. There are many different geological settings that would provided 300000 years of stable emplacement. Cask storage at surface is a viable option for the next 100 years. Longer term with breeder reactors the longevity of the could be reduced to 300 years.

If you’re on Academia, I have a paper I wrote on how Russia flushes their radioactive waste water into the nearest streams & rivers. It’s why their winter wheat crop failed, why they’re facing food shortages (& vodka shortage), & why they invaded Ukraine—who just had the highest winter wheat harvest in their entire history. wagingnonviolence.org/2022/05/
