’s Still Hold . What Surprised Scientists Is Why.
Some wild hunted in forests have radiation levels that exceed the limit deemed safe for human consumption. New research suggests that it’s not just because of .Why is the radiation in the wild boar population relatively high, when most other wildlife are uncontaminated, many generations after the accident? (Spoiler: It’s because they eat deer truffles.)

: "Historians of science and technology have seen this all before. The details were different, but the hype wasn't. If the past is any guide to the future, the push to create AGI by building ever-larger "language models" — the systems that power ChatGPT and other chatbots — will end up a giant nothingburger despite the grand proclamations all over the media.

Furthermore, there is another important parallel between radioactivity in the early 20th century and the current race to create AGI. This was pointed out to me by Beth Singler, an anthropologist who studies the links between AI and religion at the University of Zurich. She notes that just as the dangers of the everyday uses of radioactivity were ignored, the harmful everyday uses of AI are being ignored in public discourse in favor of the potential AI apocalypse.

Not long after Marie Curie wowed audiences at a major scientific conference in 1900 with vials of radium "so active that they glowed with a pearly light," a physician who studied radioactivity with Marie Curie, Sabin Arnold von Sochocky, realized that adding radium to paint caused the paint to glow in the dark. He co-founded a company that began to manufacture this paint, which was used to illuminate aircraft instruments, compasses and watches. It proved especially useful during World War I, when soldiers began to fasten their pocket watches to their wrists and needed a way to see the time in the dark trenches to synchronize their movements."

My crude but effective design. Uses Charles Wenzel's (techlib.com) HV power supply and a darlington transistor to make a led flash and a speaker emit clicking sounds.

Are Power Plants Ready for ?

As shorelines creep inland and worsen, nuclear reactors around the world face new challenges.

by John Vidal, August 21, 2018

"The outer defensive wall of what is expected to be the world’s most expensive nuclear power station is taking shape on the shoreline of the choppy gray waters of the Bristol Channel in western England.

"By the time the US $25-billion nuclear station is finished, possibly in 2028, the concrete seawall will be 12.5 meters high, 900 meters long, and durable enough, the UK regulator and French engineers say, to withstand the strongest storm surge, the greatest tsunami, and the highest sea-level rise.

"But will it? Independent nuclear consultant , a former adviser to the UK government and , points out that the tidal range along this stretch of coast is one of the highest in the world, and that is heavy. Indeed, observers reported serious flooding on the site in 1981 when an earlier nuclear power station had to be shut down for a week, following a and a . However well built, says Roche, the new seawall does not adequately take into account rise due to climate change.

" can be catastrophic to a nuclear power plant because it can knock out its electrical systems, disabling its cooling mechanisms and leading to overheating and possible and a dangerous release of . Flooding at the plant in Japan as a result of the March 2011 tsunami caused severe damage to several of the plant’s reactors and only narrowly avoided a catastrophic release of radioactivity that could have forced the evacuation of 50 million people.

"In the , where nine nuclear plants are within three kilometers of the and four reactors have been identified by Stanford academics as vulnerable to and sea-level rise, flooding is common, says David Lochbaum, a former nuclear engineer and director of the nuclear safety project at the Union of Concerned Scientists ().

"Lochbaum says over 20 flooding incidents have been recorded at US nuclear plants since the early 1980s. “The most likely [cause of flooding] is the increasing frequency of extreme events,' he says."

Marie Sklodowska Curie died July 4, 1934, from leukemia, caused by exposure to high-energy radiation from her research. The mineral Ewingite is found in the same region (Czech Republic) where uranium ore was mined for the Curie’s groundbreaking studies of ☢️💎

Happy birthday to Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) who discovered atomic recoil, Radon & recognized radioactive elements could undergo chains of transmutations into a series of new elements.

She was Rutherford’s 1st grad student at McGill. After publishing her results in 1899 she completed her MSc in 1901 on "Damping of Electrical Oscillations," before embarking on research.

"Low-background steel, also known as pre-war steel, is any steel produced prior to the detonation of the first nuclear bombs in the 1940s and 1950s. Typically sourced from ships (either as part of regular scrapping or shipwrecks) and other steel artifacts of this era, it is often used for modern particle detectors because more modern steel is contaminated with traces of nuclear fallout."

My test box I made some years ago. Basically a tin box with a lid, made light-tight with adhesive foam made for old SLR cameras. A BNC chassis socket with a bit of coax connects the outside electronics to the voltage divider/socket/PMT.
Shown are the PMT, a test doped crystal and a spark gap containing ¹³⁷Cs to generate predictable pulse heights.
