The last at has been shut down.

"...after 14 August, only 18 staff members will remain to maintain the site until the new management comes in." That is, if they can find funding.

The LNA I mentioned in my previous post, well itโ€™s a sawbird H-Line amplifier. About 41dB gain, centered around 1420MHz.

Look promising indeed ๐Ÿ™‚

A small walkthrough of my hydrogen line radio telescope, seen through an app which does a really cool AR overlay of the Milkyway.

What happens when I point the antenna to a vertical position, far away from the galaxy?
To things: 1) the 1420MHz signal disappears and 2) The noise floor drops several dB. Effectively this means at Iโ€™m picking up ground noise at this low view angle ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

10 years back, I started experimenting, building my own radio telescope. My results, trying to observe the Galaxy hydrogen line at 1420MHz, were positive but in no way impressive.

Years have passed, I have better test equipment today, I have my own lab and I have a better antenna ๐Ÿค“ ๐Ÿ“ก

So I decided to give it a go last night - and it worked!

Not ideal a summer evening like this, the sky temperature is too high, and my observing angle too low, but at least I proved it possible, itโ€™s a nice starting point ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

My setup is a vintage 17dBi standard gain horn and a 38dB LNA, cooled about 20degrees below ambient. I feed this to my spectrum analyzer.

Next step will be to build a larger antenna and try again with when everything cools down in the fall ๐Ÿ™‚

I really looked forward to share this - I hope you appreciate it ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿปโ˜บ๏ธ

Because I am prone to forgetting and losing things, I thought Iโ€™d build a small journal of materials and tasks involved in the creation of a home radio telescope. This is a work in progress...

Got the first proper metal waveguide for the finished! This will go on the first dish of the array.

It's still a way off from say the Green bank observatory or Allen array. But im just going to be looking around the hydrogen line for anything suspicious.

Just need to make a mount and slip cover for it.
