How to Grow Your Own Food – With or Without a Garden

There’s no such thing as an effortless crop, but plenty that are pretty foolproof – even if you have just a windowsill or room for a few pots.

by Alys Fowler

"If you only have a windowsill

"The Lilliputian world of offers those with the smallest of spaces the opportunity to grow some crops with flavour as well as vitamins and other nutrients. Microgreens are merely seedlings harvested when they are no more than 10cm or so high and grown so close together that they resemble a small forest. You don’t need proper pots or a seed tray: a yoghurt tub or a takeaway container will do, as long as you punch holes for drainage. Microgreens are a one-hit wonder, however – each cut is the end of life for the seedling – so you will need to re-sow every two weeks or so. When buying seeds, check the packages and hunt for those with the most inside.

"The entry level into this world, which is vast and runs from amaranth to watercress, is dried from the supermarket. Sow them cheek by jowl and cover with just a little compost. The flavour of just-harvested pea shoots is fresh and green, just as if you have been frolicking in a summer meadow. Once you have succeeded here, try the seedlings of , , , , , , (shiso) … The list is endless – even carrot seedlings are delicious.

"If you have a bit more space and a sunny enough spot, I would recommend getting a tree or perhaps a . Not because you are likely to harvest bowls full of fruit, but for the leaves, which harbour all the flavour of the rind, but in a subtle and interesting way. They can be used in curries, puddings or – my favourite – gin and tonic. You could even add some coriander microgreens and truly up your game. Citrus trees need bright, warm conditions and watering twice a week in summer."

@gardening almost a week of warm weather has made these (finally) explode.
I’m growing four varieties of : “sweet meat” maxima, “candystick” delicata, “maycock” pepo, and “goldini” pepo. The candysticks are from two different breeders, and they’re starting to look different! They’re the same size, but Adaptive’s leaves are much prettier.
The caged bed has a couple of seed pod (I thought they’d never sprout but now they have, so good luck!), two varieties of , a tree collard, and a volunteer sunflower.

Super quick and better than Chinese takeaway!
are flash fried (<1min) in a . Add some starch and water, the coarsely chopped greens of the radishes & chard, finely chopped leaves, ginger and garlic. Add cooked noodles. The finer mie noodles are better than these! Season with five spice, dark/light soy sauce and sambal. Finish with some groundnut oil.
Adding ginger and garlic towards the end gives better, fresher aroma.
<15 min prep
<2 min cooking time

Checked my small garden space & saw some pink hills popping out of the radish section. I got a spade & pulled a few that looked ready, left others to keep a steady stream coming.

Just didn't anticipate these would get so big! And the leaves are so bright. I'm going to have fun chopping these up for the birds. This is the Ruby Sparkler variety. The bunched ones in the store must be diff species or beat up in transit, b/c the leaves never look this good.

@irolita with a yard that big you could fence into quarters. Grow like and mix with other quick growing plants such as . If you planted three sections at the same time and selected the right mix for growth, you could rotate most of the way through summer. The forth and first section would be planted after the first was eaten up.

Love having fresh veggies right out of the pot when making a sandwich.

No worries about wasting or going to the shop to buy them.

They grow perfectly as companion to tomatoes and peppers on the same pot.
