Amazon workers at a depot in Coventry are poised to go on strike in the New Year over a £15-an-hour pay claim after members voted "yes" in a ballot for industrial action.
Members of the GMB Union voted to hold a second ballot after narrowly missing out on the 50% turnout threshold in October. In the new vote, 63% of members cast a ballot, with 98% of them in favour of a strike in the new year.
Nearly a quarter of the 1,400 staff employed at a depot in Coventry could walk out, becoming the first Amazon workers in the UK to strike.
Remember that Amazon workers' global action for Make Amazon Pay Day (a.k.a. Black Friday)!
People are able to donate to the stand on Epilogue’s website. They can purchase young adult, middle grade or nonfiction queer books that the Epilogue staff displays, Iori said. Patrons can also purchase a book to donate in-person in the store by letting employees know at check-out the book is for Reading Rainbows.
“The idea is that queer youth, or anyone who wants a free queer book, can just pick it up,” she described.
Wow, this way too cool!
Amazon will be forced to read out a public notice this week to all employees at a warehouse in Staten Island, New York, where workers won the first Amazon union election, stating it will "cease and desist" from retaliating against people involved in union organizing.

Listen, I know I said that I would not talk about the International Publishers Congress.
But Publishers Weekly's only article on the actual program is this one.
And they're pulling up a #WhatAboutTheChildren to expand publisher's control over education?
As I wrote two weeks ago, one of the panelist of 'The Value of EdTech' - that PW is talking about without mentioning it - was Lis Tribe.
She is a Council Member of UK Publishers Association, which has called for the shut-down of Oak National Academy, a UK online classroom!
Also, in recent news, Wiley had withdrawn free access to 1300 e-books for students, then faced so much public backlash, that they postponed the withdrawal to June 2023.
The event was so significant that it became part of the Internet Archive's briefs conclusion in its lawsuit against Publishers, but apparently not enough for it to be mentioned in PW's article.
Several organizations are now pushing to get the e-books permanently reinstated.
I just thought you might want to know it. "Embraces" might seem to have positive meaning here, it doesn't.

Thanks to @pivic for first sharing the news!
As expected, and the article doesn't mention it but according to a union representative, HC "instructed non-union employees not to mention the strike". (see second link)
Two libraries were defunded thanks to book ban campaigns and will face significant cuts or closure.
Almost all levy renewals or renewal increases for libraries passed.
Several major American cities voted in favor of municipal funding or bonds for library operations or construction.
New Mexico’s biennial GoBond for Libraries passed with over 62% support in Election Night returns and bringing in an added 10 million dollars to fund libraries.
Library construction projects saw mixed results.
Voters in Colorado created the nation’s newest library district by voting to change the Boulder Public Library from a city to a self-governing library.
At least 80% of library construction projects won.
As unionized HarperCollins employees prepare to go on an indefinite strike tomorrow, a union representative said that the publisher has no plans to reopen negotiations with those employees, and instructed non-union employees not to mention the strike.
#RadLitNews (I think from now on, actual Rad Lit News will be on here - which makes more sense now that I think about it 😐)
Yet none of the publisher's one-time or monthly pay increase percentage goes above the average inflation.
Especially, the price of necessity goods has gone higher, faster than other products, so in the end they're still losing purchasing power.
Hopefully, the strike at HarperCollins will inspire others!
The newest report conducted by the American Booksellers Association and the consulting firm Civic Economics about the negative impact of Amazon on bricks-and-mortar retailers and local communities estimates that in 2021 the movement of dollars to Amazon and away from retailers displaced 136,000 shops occupying 1.1 billion square feet of traditional commercial space. The report further noted that while Amazon has added thousands of warehouse jobs, that number is only about half as many jobs as the 1.7 million retail jobs that were lost to Amazon’s expansion.
It appears that both HarperCollins union members company and management are gearing up for the possibility of a prolonged walkout. The union has postponed a strike that was planned for today until Thursday, November 10. In October, HC union members overwhelmingly authorized a second strike following a one-day walkout in July. In supporting a new strike, the union said the second strike would be “open-ended,” suggesting that the walkout would be more than a one-day action.
