Hawker Tempest TT.5 This aircraft shows its last role in RAF service - that of a target tug - which was undertaken by one of the most potent Allied fighters of WW2. The Hawker Tempest was a superb aircraft, designed by Sir Sydney Camm, and a direct development of the Hawker Typhoon. A Napier Sabre H-bored sleeve-valve engine provided more than 2,000hp. However, dressed in black and yellow undersides, a more mundane task awaited it in the post-War world. This #aircraft is owned by the RAF Museum, but has since been moved. #RoyalAirForce #RAF #WW2 #postWW2 #fighter #history #fighter #targettug #SirSydneyCamm #RAFMuseum #Hawker #Tempest #Typhoon #Museum

This Westland Lysander is shown a typical Army Co-operation/Air Sea Rescue colour scheme. A successful STOL aircraft it first flew in 1936. Its most significant role, however, was as a covert liaison aircraft, delivering and picking up SOE agents and those fleeing the Gestapo from small fields in Occupied Europe, at night. It has known to carry three - in an emergency four - 'Joes' or passengers in the rear cockpit. This example is owned by the RAF Museum, and has been removed from the London site for restoration. #RAFMuseum, #museum #avgeek #aviation #WW2 #history #photography #WestlandAircraft #ArmyCooperation #AirSeaRescue #SOE #secretagents #Gestapo #OccupiedEurope #Europe #RoyalAirForce #STOL #aircraft #SpecialOperationsExecutive #London

English Electric/British Aircraft Corporation Lightning F.6 The last 'all-British' fighter aircraft, the #Lightning was developed from a research #aircraft, the P.1. Capable of accelerating - vertically - through Mach 1, its originally small fuel load limited the range of this Mach 2 #fighter. Later versions added more fuel and a wider range of weapons. Used by Saudi Arabia as well as the Royal Air Force, it was immensely popular with its pilots. This example - of a Lightning F.6 the last Mark used by the #RAF - is seen at the RAF Museum, #London. #EnglishElectric #RoyalAirForce #BAC #supersonic #SaudiArabia #RAFMuseum #aviation #museum #technology #Mach #design #avgeek #photography

The Airco DH.9 (designed by Geoffrey de Havilland) was a basically good design, spoilt by a poor engine.
