Apparently the #RAID0 array was fine, but a #RAID1 array is a big no-no.

So now I have to figure out how to make 2x2TB hard drives work the way I need them to.

Why is a single-disk #RAID1 set 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 considered degenerate? It seems like the perfect solution for fast backup for off-site storage, and not just redundancy..

Hmm... if i am reading sequentially from my 2x3TB #WD #Red #RAID1 (#ZFS) after a longer idle time, i achieve only 60-70 MB/s. If i am doing this for a while, it increases up to 150 MB/s and more. And i am reading different files, so it should be normally not the #ZFS #ARC.

But whats the reason then? Feels a bit like a dynamic #RPM and the #HDD is needing some time to increase that RPM.

Is there anybody who already had such a behavior and can explain it to me?

@lamp using a #RAID without #dmraid only works well with things like #RAID1 on a boot partition since that's the only way to keeo it sync and be bootable...

I usually choose to make lvm partitions to do dmraid and also choose to keep at least 25% vacant for #WearLeveling and #GarbageCollection as well as #TRIM to work, and round it down so I can mix & match drives

But then again going #ZFS is the smarter route...

Heute einen Server in den Fingern gehabt, dem ich sein #EXT4 Rootfs auf #BTRFS mit #RAID1 umziehen wollte. Lief auch alles gut, bis ich festellen musste, das der #HBA nur ein Blockdevice beim Boot anbietet und erst dann alle weiteren Devices. Etwas schlecht wenn btrfs da nen zweites Device für sein Raid sucht.
#SuperMicro hardware, schon mal jemand den Case gehabt und eine Idee wie man das Fixt? Im (U)EFI/Bios habe ich auf die schnellle nicht finden können.

I have a #Linux machine with two SSDs mounted in RAID1 using the md driver with dm-crypt then #LVM on top of that.
There was a third disk that contained the root partition and swap, but it grew errors, so I pvmove'd it to the #RAID1 set and decided to fire up the Fedora installer to 'repair' the root partition by installing the latest version on top of it.
Will #Anaconda let you do this in the installer? Yes. Will it load my config? No. Argh.

So, can y'all help me raise some funds to get this for MajorNetwork?

@Timsebimse Ja mit #raid5 und #raid6 bei #btrfs bin ich auch bis heute noch sehr vorsichtig und sehe es nicht als production read an. Anders ist das aber bei #raid1 #raid1c3 und #raidc4 , was ich auch sehr nutzte.
Wenn ich dann mal reid5/6 einsetzte, dann definitive nur für die Daten Chunks und METADATEN und SYSTEM chunks bleiben schön auf raid1c4.
Aber da tut sich ja auch wieder was und ich habe große hoffnung das der bereich, die kommenden Jahre stable wird.

Just out of pure curiousity, but does anyone in their #HomeLab have a #StorageAreaNetwork or #SAN for short? I am contemplating setting one up with a few #SBCs or low wattage machines, with all #RAID1 set-up instead of #RAID10 on a single machine.

— and RAID10 instead of RAID6 because I think the probability of 2 drives in the same vdev failing right after eachother is too low and the #resilvering in a #RAID1 vdev is a lot quicker and less wearing of the other drive.

Also read/write performance will be a lot better with both decisions

Meine #Nextcloud läuft auf einen #RaspberryPi 4b. Die Daten sind auf 2 SSDs abgelegt, die im #Raid1 Verbund laufen.
Die Datenbank liegt aber standardmäßig auf der SD-Karte (SanDisk Extreme Plus 64GB microSDXC Class 10) des Pi. Wäre es merkbar der Performance zuträglich, wenn ich die DB auch auf die SSDs verschiebe?
