Safety Inspector Fired for Finding Too Many Defects Could Cost Railroad Millions - Dude was fired for reporting the truth and his supervisor got a $20k bonus for getting rid of him and protecting corporate profits over passenger safety. Surprised? I didn’t think so. jalopnik.com/safety-inspector-

From the Great Plains of Nebraska to the California seas,
From the Summits of the Rockies to the mighty redwood trees
We're a thousand wheels of freight train, hear the diesel engine's power,
We're the Union Pacific, doin' ninety miles an hour...

Bound from Omaha to Portland through Cheyenne and Laramie,
We're a-headin' west for Boise on the Mainline to the sea
'Cross the flats at Salt Lake City, on to Vegas and L.A.
We're the Union Pacific and we've got the Right-of-Way.

More Than 59 Derailed In The 6 Months Following The Disaster
At least 15 of those trains were hauling chemicals when they jumped track.
Six months after East Palestine, it's back to business for America's freight . Vice only looked at bad enough to generate local news attention, which cut the derailment rate from the 106 reported to regulatory bodies down to 59 derailments covered in the press. vice.com/en/article/n7edkw/doz

Looking out from the Goat Lick Outlook on Rte 2 in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Turns out the goats are mostly in season there in April and May. They really do lick rocks there for the minerals that help thier summer diet.
Was bored and not paying attention when i noticed the end of a train going over this bridge spanning a large ravine.
yeah, I know, another boring train pic.

Railway electrification in Europe is a mess.
Ought the EU provide funding to help (smaller?) ones change over to the modern standard?
(I.e. 25 kV, 50 Hz)

I found a list of live webcams from train stations, but I'm wondering if anyone knows about more webcams like this one, showing the view from a train going through Norway.

How about another photo? This is from last Sunday July 9. The train has come down from the rockies and is heading towards Denver near Golden Colorado.
Just happened to come across this . The is behind and to the left out of shot.
Check out the web page link below for more photos and a bit of story. Thanks - Tim

From Sept 2021, Union Pacific's steam engine coming into Greeley Colorado as part of a tour of middle America.
I followed it across part of Colorado over two days. Judge me as you will, I was not alone.
I believe this is the largest steam engine in the US. Was built in the 1940’s to haul loads over the rockies more efficiently.

When writing my first book, I extracted a number of freight and passenger statistics from annual reports of Southern railroads. I have made those statistics publicly available on the Magazine of Early American Datasets. For more about what I found and how it can be accessed, see this blog post:

On July 7, 1909, four cars of the 10-coach Santa Fe No. 5 rolled into 8 feet of fast-moving flood water just half a mile from Pomona, Kansas. 300 people were aboard the train; all but one--a 4-year-old named Georgie Rhodes--survived. @histodons

@sp @nothacking And (at least in any sensible country) there's no invasive body scanners, no need to empty your pockets, no need to take your laptop out of your bag and on to a scanner.

Also, you board through two doors per carriage, rather than trying to use two doors to board the whole plane.

That means no "business class, premium frequent flyer, and special needs passengers are now boarding", "we're now boarding rows one through 20".

And there's no strict baggage limits, as you get on low-cost carriers. No extra fees if your checked suitcase weighs 19Kg when the checked baggage limit is 18kg. No last minute panic because you're only allowed 7.5kg of carry-on luggage but your bag just weighed in at 8Kg.

That means there's no need to arrive an hour early for a domestic flight or three hours early for international.

“I also shouldn’t overstate the magnitude of the gain here. A week of sick leave is objectively pitiful by international standards. Still, it’s far better than nothing, and it certainly wouldn’t have happened without union pressure, support from Congress and the Biden administration, and substantial media coverage of the dispute.”

I’m reflecting on living in a country where 7 days of per year is a victory.
