Safety Inspector Fired for Finding Too Many Defects Could Cost Railroad Millions - Dude was fired for reporting the truth and his supervisor got a $20k bonus for getting rid of him and protecting corporate profits over passenger safety. Surprised? I didn’t think so. jalopnik.com/safety-inspector-

Why is the EPA response to the East Palestine train disaster so crappy? Too much deference to local authorities and too many Republican budget cuts.

' There is much to do. But the E.P.A. can’t do it without more people and money. After years of funding cuts, the agency is doen to 15,115 employees this year, from 18,110 in 1999 ... Congress needs to approve more funding for this crucial agency. '

Roads and other US transportation infrastructure is publicly owned. should be, too.

A for-profit owner will always cut corners to increase profits. simply doesn’t matter to them.

There may have been an article listing toxic train disasters on Counterpunch years ago. A search turned up this other valuable article.
> its not just oil company and carrier greed for cash generating cargo like fracked oil to blame for the current disasters, you can also chalk up the railroad’s desire to save just a little more fuel, at the expense of safety, for the mess we are in.

Did you know:

1. NASA promotes air safety through its successful and confidential Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), which started in 1976.

2. Based on its success, in 2010 NASA partnered with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to promote railway safety by creating its similar Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS).

Both are managed at NASA Ames in Silicon Valley.
