What a lovely photo! Taff Vale Railway locomotive No.267.
It was built by Hudswell Clarke in 1867 and numbered 107 by the TVR.
Subsequently renumbered 267 in 1892 and rebuilt in the Cardiff Works 1895-96 as solitary member of the ’S’ Class.
Finally scrapped by the GWR in 1926.

Sir Daniel Gooch was a legendary engineer in the formative years of the Great Western Railway. But he served his apprenticeship at Tredegar Ironworks!
His personal association and friendship with Victorian engineering giants such as Brunel makes for fascinating reading, as are his observations on society.

Take a close look at this map of the Pontypridd, Caerphilly & Newport Railway. It is surprising to realise that it's no more than the short red coloured line in the centre left of the diagram!
Built to take coal traffic from the Rhondda, at just over 5 miles long, PC&N traffic passed over tracks of no fewer than SIX companies between Pontypridd and Newport Docks!

On the face of it a book about the Cardiff Railway is a strange subject for a series on the Docks! Not so strange when it is revealed that the Bute Docks Company became the Cardiff Railway!
This book is more a pictorial profile of the railway than a formal history of the company.

A largely run of the mill p0rtrait album of Welsh railways from 1980 to 2010, a time of profound change.
But there are some unusual images here, which combined with low second hand price and good quality photos makes it a worthwhile buy.

Black and white photographs of mineral trains at Penrhos Junction near Caerphilly are normally steamers.
But this is something a little different! A Class 37 diesel (no. 37217) pictured on 16/4/81 heading for Aber Junction Yard.
I reckon monochrome suits this image very well indeed!

Interesting historical context and background stories of railway lines affected by the 1963 Beeching Report.
But there is very little strategic analysis of the overall effect on South Wales transport.

In 1825 engineer George Overton published a book of ideas and reflections on his working life.
More than half of the the volume dealt with his contribution to South Wales tramroads including construction of the Penydarren.

The Class37 (originally known as the English Electric Type 3) is one of the best known diesels on Britain’s railways. It was a common sight on freight trains around South Wales.
This book contains well composed photos, often showing the trains along with lineside and infrastructure detail.

In the history of steam locomotion, Richard Trevithick holds a central position.
The journey of his locomotive in February 1804 is the first documented use of a railway steam engine.
