A beautiful coexistence of tradition and adaptation/ progression.

Great news!
The rakugo-inspired installation art that Fiona Amundsen and I created will be exhibited in Finland!
It's based on my actual and imaginary conversation with my late grandpa, who was a survivor of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. Humour... and tears.
The work was originally created for Things That Shape Us exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery.

"Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju" (昭和元禄落語心中) undoubtedly is the best-known rakugo manga/ anime and depicts the world of rakugo really accurately.
This work has been translated into multiple languages including English, and it is also available on Netflix.
However, there is another less-known manga called "Akanebanashi" (あかね噺) that is authentic AND entertaining.
Volume 5 was published today, and I am reading the digital version right now!
The #rakugo inspired art project that Fiona Amundsen and I created will be exhibited in a museum in #Finland!
This work is based on my imaginary conversation between my late grandfather, who witnessed the atomic bombing of #Nagasaki, and myself. It was originally exhibited at #Christchurch Art Museum.
If you are interested in finding out more about our work, please refer to my blog: https://rakugonz.com/2021/07/25/departed-souls-things-that-shape-us/

One of the greatest #rakugo masters of all time, Tatekawa Danshi (1935-2011), defined this art form as "the acceptance of human nature".
As mentioned in another post, rakugo is a Japanese comedy tradition, but it always deals with the imperfection of our existence- our stupidity, self-centredness, greed, lust, etc.
In this tradition alone, I find my place to be, being full of imperfections myself!
So... what is #rakugo?
In short, it's a #Japanese traditional art of comedic storytelling that began at Seigan Temple in Kyoto. The head monk, Anrakuan Sakuden (安楽庵策伝, 1554-1642), began introducing comedic elements in his delivery of #Buddhist teachings as a way to keep his students awake.
He published a book called "Seisuishou (醒酔笑)", which roughly means "Laughter to Awaken Readers".
Later this tradition developed in Osaka/ Kyoto and Tokyo separately and is still alive and well today!
My American #writer friend, Kristine Ohkubo, has recently published her first collection of brand-new AND original #rakugo stories.
In #Japan, there are professional writers who are specialised in writing rakugo scripts, but this is probably the first time in history for a non-Japanese writer to publish rakugo stories in English. I'm impressed how she captured the essence of rakugo so well.
I've been given her permission to perform her stories. Looking forward to staging her work!
The one and only Swedish professional #rakugo performer, Sanyutei Kouseinen, is on Mastodon!

My #rakugo master, Kanariya Eiraku, will be touring in the Bay Area soon!
The tour kicks off at San Jose State University on 8 March.
Come enjoy some rakugo performances in English by Eiraku and his students!
"Hangonkou" (反魂香) is an incense that is said to invoke the spirit of the dead.
There is a #rakugo story based on this incense, and it's said that the story originates in China and dates back to the reign of Emperor Wu (141–87 BC).
In this story, the main character's lover comes back to life, and they spend some emotional, poignant time together. But the story ends abruptly with the most unexpected punchline.
I always cry whenever I listen to this story. Very unique rakugo story.
Seems like nobody else has ever used the hashtag #rakugo here, so here goes the first one!
I'm a #rakugo performer based in Auckland, NZ and introduce this art in English. I'm a wannabe Twitter refugee, currently considering moving over here.
I'll be posting about #rakugo, #japan, #japanese culture, #japanese language, and #tereo as I am a 3rd year Te Ataarangi (Māori full-immersion programme) student 😃
