Bakshi believed that animation could be viable as entertainment for adults, not just children. His Fritz the Cat (1972) was the first X-rated animated feature in the US; later The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat was the first R-rated animated film.
But my favorite Bakshi film was released one year prior to LotR: Wizards (1977).
