Lycoris, orphans raised by the state and trained as assassins disguised as uniformed school girls, keep Japan safe by preemptively eliminating threats before they can cause harm.

When an illegal weapon sale goes wrong and a fellow Lycoris is taken hostage, Takina Inoue acts without orders and opens fire with a nearby heavy machine gun killing the gun dealers and saving the hostage.

And thus starts the explosively animated and delightfully cheerful Lycoris Recoil #anime.

K-On! is kinda the Seinfeld of Anime. It's a show about nothing… there are no major ongoing plots or conflicts… yet is a show that is both brilliant and hilarious because of the strength of its characters.

Take the infamous strawberry scene of S2E14. It's not deviously funny because of some intricate plot, it's funny because it plays on the built up relationships between each of the main characters that only has full impact if you've watched the entire rest of the show.

The Military Uniform Princess is the main antagonist in Re:Creator and easily the most powerful of the Created fictional characters who cross over from their #anime, manga, or light novels into our real world.

While other Created gain their powers and limitations from their source materials, she is more an internet meme remixed time and again than a singular character which results in her having a broad range of nearly unbeatable powers.

Too bad she wants to destroy our world.

A Place Further Than The Universe has it all. An amazing cast, a terrific story of friendship and loss, wonderfully memorable music, and it's filled end to end with great animation!

This stunning chase through the streets and alleys of the Kabukichō entertainment district is so much fun and has so many great little sequences to it. Here, in this long panning shot near the end, Mari Tamaki is having the time of her life finally putting her youth into motion.

Police in a Pod really is something...

The one episode mini arc ending with this scene did such a good job of showing how hard it is to be a police officer... and then flipping it around and showing why even a timid, emotional rookie cop would continue doing the job even when stressful doesn't come close to covering how bad things can get.

Great stuff… and very all too real at the same time!

This shot from the 5th episode of Macross Frontier #anime shows off the huge scale of Island 1.

Sheryl drags Alto around as her personal tour guide, but things slowly begin to change between them. We've seen Sheryl be a bitchy super star, but now she is slowly revealed to be someone who appreciates being treated like a normal person.

And Alto, who is actually a super star in his own right but is on the run from his family and stardom, is the perfect person to connect with her.

One of the coolest bits of animation to come from Aldnoah.Zero is this earth Kataphrakt being destroyed.

The CG model is cut in half by a laser, but the explosion and environmental destruction switches to entirely hand drawn!

A couple frames show the Kataphrakt being ripped apart as its power pack detonates, and a few more show pieces of it tearing through the surrounding cityscape. Note that the light pole and vehicles are both affected by the blast.

Cool stuff!

Roughly half the people in the town of Sakurada have special powers.

Misora Haruki's is to save a point in time and then, within 3 days, say “Reset" to reset the entire world, herself included, to that point.

Kei Asai's is his perfect, unalterable memory. He alone is one of the few people in the world who can remember what happened before a Reset.

Seika Nono’s is to see through the eyes of any cat within Sakurada while she is asleep. Very useful for gaining intel!

One of my favorite show nicknames recently has been whoever termed Akebi's Sailor Uniform “Komi Can Communicate" to play off the Komi Can't Communicate #anime. :p

Komichi Akebi, whose name is at one point shortened to “Komi”, is this energetic, athletic, open to anything first year junior high student who just naturally becomes the core figure in her class with how much she enjoys being around and supporting her friends.

And it's great when they come out to support her, too!

Shoko Komi’s intense, lifelong nervousness always prevented her from interacting with her classmates. But on the first day of high school Hitohito Tadano sees past her beauty and seemingly stuck up nature to the emotionally trapped girl beneath.

Turns out, the nearly mute Komi can manage to write out the words she is too shy to say culminating in this brilliantly animated scene of the two connecting by writting messages back and forth on their classroom’s chalkboard.

Misa Hayase gazes back at the red planet with a broken heart. She was forced to finally come to terms with the fact that her first love truly died years ago when she finds his room at a long abandoned base on Mars.

Beside her sits Hikaru Ichijyo still in the cockpit of his transformable Valkyrie fighter. He looks on at his usually unflappable commander who he had to pull away from her sorrow with seconds to spare before the base self destructed with her still in it.

"We. Are. A. Family!"

Astra Lost In Space at first seems like a fairly goofy sci-fi romp, but by the end of the first episode it proves it's got some serious heart as well as pretty darn good character stories to tell.

Watching these disparate high school students flung to the far side of space slowly come to rely upon each other and truly become a family as they overcome situation after situation on their long journey home is one of the highlights of this great #anime.

I love the artistry of this sequence in Your Name. There’s this great little great art shift from Shinkai's typical stylized photorealism to... chalk in motion... that is stunning and gives an extra layer of weight to Taki's visions of Mitsuha's birth, life, and death.
