b) Restoring a sense of agency amongst voters is also a challenge. The has spent decades promulgating anti government views, turning government into the enemy, cultivating a view that governance is somehow not controlled by voters. Voters don’t believe they can drive change anymore

Fixing election financing and stepping away from our two party system using voting would be particularly helpful

LOL, I could go on….

It is impressive how little understanding there was of the voting system used. Even this article has paragraphs that are complete nonsense. The county implemented two votings systems at once, ranked choice and proportional representation. They only mentioned the first one in the lead up to the election. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/20

👍 In the current US election system, a left-leaning third party only helps Republicans win (and is likely to be funded by Republicans), and a right-leaning only helps Democrats win (and is likely to be funded by Democrats). It's the spoiler effect in First Past The Post (), explained well by in this video

If you want more real political parties, elect Democrats and pressure them to pass voting for all elections

In a "winner takes all" two-party political system you cannot in good faith run as a . You ARE splitting the vote and you MUST know that already, otherwise you're a political rube who has no place in high office [1].

voting or similar schemes address this. You need that in place FIRST.

Our preferential system of voting gives Australians the opportunity to loosen the stifling grip of the two party system while maintaining political stability.

For the most part, we are only given two choices in terms of government, so you should almost never give your first preference to the Coalition or Labor. Put your preferred government (out of those two) second.

You can even put them further down the list, as long as you preference them above the government you want to avoid. The only time this doesn't apply is when you are offered no viable alternatives.

Research the others. See who else might better represent you. Make them number one. We don't have to live in Groundhog Day.

I'm a Green, but this is not just for Greens voters.

Spending my Sunday evening reading up on counting systems. Ran across two websites, one has nothing nice to say about and nothing but nice to say about (now branded as ), and the other site vice versa. I think none of these argue in good faith.

Did a quick search & review of vs. aka . Very partisan articles -- each one says why their method is great & the other lousy. Opponents of approval voting say we have not tried it enough to have evidence, therefore we should not try it.

Thinking of all the Americans who pooh-poohed and PR systems for taking too long to come to a conclusion
is now on count 11 in a single-seat constituency and they are now adding in the joke candidates that would have been eliminated in the 1st round under

even when tallying is perfect, i think is usually superior to for single-winner elections.

but i usually think the critique that is "complicated to implement" is a bit of a strawman (although "complicated to understand" is an important critique).

sometimes, however, the strawman rises from the haystack.

@rbreich Votes, but we also must go to a voting system.

We also need to yearly tax audit all nationally elected officials, and all that are appointed via congress. This includes the President, VP, , , Judges, Cabinet position, Department heads, etc.

@greengordon Yes, I remember both those cases, bitterly. Your post reminded me that I just got an email about Yukon’s Citizens Assembly and so I thought I’d share this. secure.fairvote.ca/en/civicrm/

This, and the recent Alaska experience (albeit that was not ), gives me hope.
