Foggy full moon with Torrey Pine trees in coastal chaparral and blooming White Coast Ceanothus; Del Mar, California; February 2017.

The Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) is one of the rarest pine trees on Earth; it only grows in a small coastal stretch of San Diego. A sub-species grows on Santa Rosa Island.

"Thismia kobensis was first discovered in Kobe City..Japan in 1992, but it was believed to be extinct, given that its type locality was destroyed during the construction of an industrial complex. Here, we have reported the rediscovery of T. kobensis in Sanda City..which is located approximately 30 km from the type locality. The new locality of T. kobensis is the northernmost distributional limit of Asian Thismiaceae species"

Finding new plants to photograph in San Diego County doesn't happen as often as it used to, anymore. :)

This is actually a fern, going by the common name California Adder's Tongue (Ophioglossum californicum) — a rare plant in California due to its limited distribution. It's rather small, and was quite a nice find!

280 from San Bruno to Cupertino is exclusive, wealthy, devoid of black and indigenous residents, and where the earliest species on the List, the checkerspot , was extirpated by the nitrogen deposition from cars on serpentine soils, causing invasive grasses to blot out the sun for the caterpillars host plant. Today to protect the wealth CalFire has destroyed in this stretch for 100s of and species including the western blue bird.

I buy the odd rare plant and just bought one of these.

These are hard to find, and if you do they're generally expensive.

peyotillo (pelecyphora aselliformis)
Pelecyphora aselliformis is relatively rare and is only found in northern Mexico. The plant is propagated from seeds in the same manner as Lophophora williamsii. It grows very slowly and must be protected from excessive moisture and from frosts (Ratsch 1998, 428).
