I still don’t have that beautiful, fully realized autistic System for keeping my raspberry canes from drooping, so I end up waiting almost too long to cobble something together.
This was a raspberry patch previously, and I had my landscapers relocate all they could find to a new more spacious bed. Of course they missed a few, and those leftovers are doing a baller job making first year berries!
Later in the fall, after they’ve finished bearing and we’ve gotten some rain, I’m going to try to dig out all of these volunteers. I really do have enough raspberry plants right now, so I’m going to pot them up and overwinter them and give them to Raul, the landscaping owner, in the spring. I gave him a dozen excess bare root strawberries this spring, and it just feels correct to offer these plants back to the guys who help me labor over them.
Screws, string, and electrical conduit straps are some of my essential garden junk, along with pvc pipe (sized to the conduit straps) and chicken wire. What’s your favorite garden junk that gets reused a hundred ways?

The first raspberry of 2023 was glorious.
-Wait, what? You’re thinking.
-Don’t you live near Seattle?
Well, yeah. Last year I had a fine crop of #raspberries in a crowded old bed in a bad spot. They needed a new home. In the early fall I got the landscapers out (they do my heavy digging type work, they rule) and they moved all the canes to a much larger new bed, with irrigation.
The canes came through the winter nicely, but they didn’t manage a main crop on their last-year’s branches. It looked like the canes were just surviving while the plants established their roots. When the new canes came in, they had flowers and they’re making berries. It seems late for the second flush of berries, but we’ve had such a chilly summer over here.

We're not even at peak berry and still the garden's producing a huge bowl every few days - mostly #raspberries with the odd show-off #blueberry and #strawberry. You can imagine how this smells.

We don't just grow flowers, so showing off our 2nd yr #raspberry bush has produced plenty of little fruits this year. Last year because it was new it only produced a few, but this year as it was more established, it's produced lots!

Hubby regularly grows #cucumbers and zucchinis, but the zucchinis are a no go with so many slugs. But we've had better success with cucumbers, and our first decent looking one is a winner!
