For #MosaicMonday: another of the 420
original 1906 #Moravian tiles by Henry Chapman #Mercer on the #Pennsylvania Capitol floor, many featuring #PA #animals: 394, “Crotalus.” That’s the scientific name for a genus of #rattlesnakes, only one of which is native to PA: Crotalus horridus, the Timber Rattlesnake.

Yesterday's snake photos made me think of the `night of 10,000 fangs`, which happend at our house sometime in the early morning hours of Sept3, 2011. We had five dogs at the time, and we woke up in the morning to find our biggest guy, Zero, curled up on the floor by the bed. I reached down to pat his head, and my hand came up bloody.

Here’s a short video of #rattlesnakes displaying courtship behavior I was able to observe at the Berlin Zoo. People often mistake #snakes fighting (which tends to resemble vertical wrestling) for courting, when the actual courtship looks quite different!
