"Because he had no terminal, no pen, no paper, he kept this information in the memory palace he had built in his mind. His memory palace was a Japanese inn. Not just any inn: it was the Minaguchi-ya, on the Tokaido Road, between Tokyo and Kyoto. Eiko had never visited the Minaguchi-ya, but he had read an ancient book, by a gaijin from the old American States named Oliver Statler."

"In the dream, Ha never saw the cuttlefish as they were in their prime - bright and luminous, streaked with kaleidoscopic color change, arranging their arms in semaphores of threat or curiosity. No. In the dream she descended, caged in the white noise of her respirator. Down into water clouded calcitic-gray. Down to a silt bottom strewn with stones."

I'll probably give the book a go - and this is certainly true, isn't it?

I just finished reading The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler, a book that will have you thinking about it days after finishing and sure to be shortlisted for many awards next year.

Highly recommended.

I loved this book, enticed by my love of cephalopods. It may be pidgeon holed into the SciFi genre but is actually a deep philosophical musing on consciousness, sentience, communication and what it is to be human. Never dry or didactic it was a thrilling read.
