Infrastructure certainly is a metaphor that can be extended upon!

In case of the electrical grid, hooking up your own solar system may even reduce load on the overall system (but increase need for control).

Maybe part of the cultural change is accepting that the "return on investment" on #RDM may not come for you, but for others, or may not come at all in some cases.

Maybe a cultural change to improve RDM and Openness is also a kind of insurance?

Would you agree that these "extra" resources to be ahead of the curve in the cultural change on #RDM can be seen as an investment that will pay off at some point?

Another barrier therefore comes to mind: the ones setting the agenda (deciding about the money) are not the ones with the biggest pains about a lack of change. The already overloaded and engaged enthusiasts can only push so far.

A lack of commitment by leadership will stop any change.

@nuest @NFDI I've not encountered #RDM in the wild before but I'm really happy to see it. When I did my PhD I had a few conversations with my supervisors about my anxiety that the datasets that I built and published would not be considered "proper research". They were always very supportive and highlighted how much hard work goes into building and curating a research dataset. I hope that this sort of anxiety will be less common in future.

Cultural change in research data management is the process to make #RDM practices common and have them valued as a scientific contribution. It is a discourse on how to make RDM (and its results) part of education and evaluation, and how to challenge habits and beliefs so that open data will become the default, including...

- sharing good reusable data
- building your work on data created by others
- data citations
- data that is published as part of a PhD "counts"
