Read Harder Challenge Task 8: Read an independently published book by a BIPOC author.
I read 'Her Body and Other Parties: Stories' by Carmen Maria Machado.

[She]..blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism.

A collection of short stories, I found it
weird, provocative and interesting!

Read Harder 2023 Task 22: Read any book from the Ignyte awards shortlist/longlist/winner list.

Black Sun, Rebecca Roanhorse won the Best Adult Novel in 2021. "An epic adventure inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue and forbidden magic."

Fascinating worldbuilding, I really loved it! I read the next book right away.

Read Harder 2023 Task 8: Read a graphic novel/comic/manga if you haven’t before; or read one that is a different genre than you normally read.

I haven't read any manga before, so I chose My Brother's Husband by Gengoroh Tagame goodreads.com/book/show/323378

This was just beautiful! 🎲6 "an unprecedented and heartbreaking look at the state of a largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture"

Read Harder 2023 Task 4: Read a book that’s been challenged recently in your school district/library OR read one of the most-challenged/banned books of the year by a queer and/or BIPOC author

It's a long time since any books have been banned in Norway, so I went with one from USA: The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas goodreads.com/book/show/320756

I loved this book, even though it was heartbreaking, because it was so real and important.

I did finish the 2022 Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge, yay for me! In this thread I'm listing which books I chose for the 24 tasks, and what I thought of them. I will be doing the 2023 challenge, but that's a different thread!

Read Harder Task #6 Read a Nonfiction YA Comic:
I went for Maus by Art Spiegelman, it was on my TBR list and I think it can count as YA.
I agree that it is a must-read, it's also heartbreaking. 🎲5

I usually like to do multiple books for challenges - in this case, I'm looking for a copy of Zenna Henderson's Pilgrimage - which might involve a trip to the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation & Fantasy in Toronto.

Apparently Octavia Butler loved this book so much, that she'd give it out as a gift.

Sort of interesting to me, that I'm not able to find Pilgrimage as an e-book, despite being published much ten years later than the Sturgeon book.

I have just changed from the Mastodon.LOL server to bookstodon.com, so an introduction is in order.

I used to read 100-150 books a year, before the pandemic broke everything.

I may never read as voraciously as I did before, but I would like to read with intention.

I will be participating in the 2023 challenge - bookriot.com/read-harder-2023/ and will attempt to blog my adventures at purdy-johnson.com.
