"Beautiful Woman Reading a Book," Uemura Shōen, 1941.

Uemura was a woman in a very male-dominated profession in Japan, but she succeeded in painting women who were not merely beautiful & laid out for the viewers' delectation, but women with real souls & personalities going about daily activities. She didn't want to paint a woman who was just beautiful but who had other things going on.
