I am really enjoying "Priory of the Orange Tree". I know some people didn't like it, and said it was over-rated. But I'm wondering if that is mostly because of people pushing it so hard on TikTok. Like "Whatever is popular I must hate or hold to unreal standards". What I like is the lgbtq representation, and that it's okay to have best friends of a different gender and it won't turn romantic. And so far no love triangles. Which is beautiful (I HATE that trope. I will DNF a book for that). Healthy poly relationships are fine, but that "Who do I choose? Good guy that is nice to me, or bad boy that is awful but looks hot?" trope is not my thing.

I think I'm going to take a small break from my project read session, and read book 3 and 4 of the Wicked series. I bloody loved Wicked in highschool. Used to have it on my lap in class under my desk, text book above on top of desk, and would read it and the teachers never caught on. I can't remember why I didn't finish the series. Given I own the physical copies of book 3 and 4.

So while grocery shopping at my local Dollar General, when I stumbled across this beast, priced at 3 dollars. Being a fantasy nut I couldn't resist and luckily had my personal change I've been saving just for such cases (both our essentials stores sell all their books for 3, but they usually are political or awful).
Didn't realize I already had Tad Willaims original series that goes back 24 years before this one. So now I'm reading those so I have context about what is going on in this one (got confused in chapter 2, but it's amazing!). The print is soooo tiny though, so reading glasses will have to be worn when I pick it up.
Title: The Witchwood Crown by Tad. It's Willaims. A lot of you probably know him. This is the first book of his new sequel series to the "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" series his wrote in 1988. What an epic find! Pretty chunky for $3!

My next read is another amazing book "How Far We Go In The Dark" by Sequoia Nagamatsu. It's about a ancient artic virus that's unleashed due to global warming. So far it's excellent, and rough on the feelers on occasion.

Finished reading "Light From Uncommon Stars" by Ryka Aoki last night. What a great first book to start 2023 with. The mix of visitors from outer space that set up a donut shop, woman cursed by a demon who has to give hell 7 souls, and a amazing transgender girls for a main character who is written as having struggles that are very real and authentic was incredible. The LGBTQ themes were present in such a great way too. 5 stars! Sounds like a short story book, but it's not. All these people and stories exist in the main story, which is why it drew me. Who thought sci fi and deals with demons could exist in the same story.
It is for sure a cozy "give you a hug" type book, but that's why it's such a great book to read in 2023. Definetly got Wayfarer vibes.

Really enjoying Salem's Lot. Not too far in it, but it's really good. I adore Stephen King, and own a lot of his works. I tried reading it as a teen and got bored. But I think that since I'm an adult, the stories of the towns people is more interesting. After this I need to finish The Stand. And then maybe It.

Even though we don't have centralized heating, at least I'm warm. Wife woke me up on accident, so now I'm trying to go back to sleep by reading "The World We make". Half way done, and what a lovely book. Even more engaging then the first. Never been to New York, but I feel I understand it a bit more. Roomie is from New York (and Arizona and Pennsylvania) and it astounds me she ever survived there honestly. It sounds magically, but also terrifying. Much like Las Vegas, where I was born and raised until 1999 when my parents naively moved to Idaho thinking it was safer and more affordable (it isn't). I like when books make me feel a place in my bones, fantasy or real. This book does that beautiful. And the inclusion of the lqbtq community as main characters is chefs kiss :blobCoffeeJump:
