Omnivore (@omnivore) just announced on Discord that they’ll remove Elastic Search from the self-hosting requirements, making it easier to selfhost. As of today, there’s no simple solution for self-hosting Omnivore like there is with Wallabag.

Omnivore (@omnivore) keeps getting better, and I have high hopes for the future since Omnivore will become self-hostable (which is the best we got since there are no end-to-end encrypted read-it-later services).

There are still some deal-breakers, but it’s definitely worth testing!

I'm trying to get my #wallabag article list under control. What tags do you use in your #ReadItLater app? Just throwing random single (or hyphenated) tags on each article is not making thing easier to find.

I have yet to figure out a good system for keeping articles around to read later. I could use Pocket but then need to pay for the service that keeps the article after it’s removed from the website. I tried OneNote, but the notebooks become large. Not sure what else is out there. #readitlater #savingarticles

A 2015 article on read-it-later apps inspired me to write an essay on combining a feed reader with a read-it-later app to replace social media and services like Google News and Apple news for online reading (note READING only... I recall this having been a point of confusion regarding my 2021 article on RSS as a Facebook alternative). While I have never been much of a social media or algorithimic news reader, I do describe how I approach feeds and read-it-later and offer recommendations.

Looking for a lightweight 'offlineish' read-it-later service that just uses a simple DB or maybe even JSON file to sync via something like Google Drive/Dropbox. I'm both surprised and not surprised such a thing doesn't exist. (I know about wallabag, etc.) #selfhost #readitlater #app

It's the smallest thing, but for some reason Apple seems to want Unread to verify that I want to add a link to Safari's reading list every time I save one. I don't have to do that with other share actions. Not sure how this serves my interests.

Also hilarious to me that making me move my thumb <0.5" feels like a forced march across the frozen tundra after two or three repetitions.
