I'd also add that it is difficult for many to accept acquired identities. You may feel as a European or as someone who is, for instance, Croatian even though you're born and raised somewhere else, but people always try to boil it down to the soil: 'Yes, I understand how you feel but you're Bulgarian, right?' So, we're even denied, in people's minds, our acquired or built identities that make us feel more comfortable where we are. We're constantly reminded where we 'really' belong

In this I disagree with the author that only non-white Europeans are being asked the question 'Where you really are from'. This exclusive treatment can be experienced not toward people from different races but also from different countries, or even cities. I'm not saying this to diminish the problem of racism, not the least. Just to remind us all that it is exclusion that lies beneath this all

All this with the idea to make you feel that you're not a real You-Name-It, that you don't belong. I myself were from the 'white' ones in Sofia but always felt this was very wrong. Later, when I moved to exercise my cherished freedom of movement in the EU, I experienced the same treatment as my non-Sofia-born fellow citizens. The minute 'Europeans' heard I was from Bulgaria, the attitudes would immediately change. And I am white, currently even blonde.

This article reminded me of observations I made during my youth in Bulgaria and which are still a thing (as far as I'm aware). During communist times, Sofia was made a fortress for communist 'nobilities'. It was forbidden for people from other cities & towns in Bulgaria to move to Sofia, unless they were hired there or were married. Therefore, it was rather the norm that people from the countryside...
