@wendypalmer @bookstodon for a 12-year old who loves mysteries, #JamesPonti has the wonderful CITY SPIES series with a bunch of 13-ish-year old international spies. He might like WHEN YOU REACH ME by #RebeccaStead too, and ORPHANS OF THE TIDE by #StruanMurray also great (though contains some magic.) Maybe #librarians #schoollibrarians can suggest others?
