Instead, we document a #reboundeffect: higher yields = more deforestation. This is particularly likely where commodity crop production dominates (which is in most places where agriculture expands into tropical forests at the moment). This means: intensification alone will not protect tropical forests – we need area-based measures such as land-use zoning or protected areas to halt forest loss.
