I'd like to tag this #Reconciliation, but #Ontario is arguing that the #Anishnabe share of resources extracted from Lake Superior is more than covered by the $4 per person annually they've been receiving since the 1800s. So, not so much.

And if you've ever been to the American Natural History Museum, you might have seen the “Whalers Washing House" which was a sacred shrine with dozens of tall human forms made of wood (Picture in the article). They were taken from the Mowachaht/Muchahlaht in Yuquot in 1904.
Here's hoping one day they are returned.

In the case of the great uncle and great aunt I mentioned yesterday, it was positive messaging about what these relatives represented that blinded me to the negative impact they had. We grew up thinking of these 19th century ancestors as adventurous explorers who travelled north and interacted with First Nations in an era when our society had different values.

I don't think it's widely enough known that, before #WW1, #Germany carried out #genocide in German South West #Africa, now #Namibia. In many ways, it presaged the #holocaust. Despite talk of #reconciliation, Namibians still await reparations (from @ndaktuell, in German)

"Possibly the key learning from the 1967 referendum is that to have a chance of success the campaign must be based on an emotional appeal that captures an essence, the failure to Close the Gap, not the letter of constitutional provision. The themes of the 1967 campaign were to do right by Aboriginal peoples, to act with justice, “Vote YES for Aboriginal Rights”, “Vote YES for Aboriginal Citizenship Rights”, and “Remove Discrimination”."
