The Union won, and federal troops occupied the South during what's called the ; the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and "Reconstruction Amendments" to the Constitution (13, 14, and 15) were signed and implemented and progress could've grown deep roots...

but it all got rooted up and killed with the to settle the disputed presidential election of 1876.
