As the #electricvehicles arms race amps up, this American factory, #LiCycle, is working to recycle outdated and abandoned #EVbatteries.
The process is fascinating, and means that up to 95% of the material that goes into an EV battery can be stripped down and fully #recycled, which is pretty impressive considering the environmental impact of mining such materials new.

In much of the developed world, waste is out of sight and out of mind. The world generates around 2 billion tons of #municipal #solid #waste #annually, with at least 33% of it #not #managed in an #environmentally #safe #manner, according to a 2018 World Bank report. Though high-income countries only account for 16% of the world’s population, they generate about 34% of the world’s waste each year. A third of all 3food produced is wasted and ends up in the garbage can. 3Plastic waste is another mounting issue: Across the globe, #less than 10% of it is #recycled, according to the most recent data from 2018 published by the #Organization for #Economic #Cooperation and #Development. Plastic waste has more than doubled globally since 2000.

I can't remember who'd done that documentary on the back of a Greenpeace report, but the journalist travelled to Indonesia and saw plastic bags from his local supermarket there (it had the city name on it). When it was supposed to be #recycled. 🙄

It's nearly impossible to find products with 100% #recycled #plastics, and when you do, they're rarely quality, ending up being less durable more wasteful than the better products made of new materials. There's no winning. #ClimateChange
