I'm looking for a Reddit alternative and was looking at Lemmy, the fediverse alternative. I know it's not as popular as mastodon, but was just wondering, what peoples experiences are and how it compares to Reddit. Thanks.

rif subreddit -

"Thank you everyone. /r/redditisfun going Restricted...The blackout is starting so this subreddit will be Restricted."

draft - Now that the blackout is sort of over, can we reopen r/redditisfun? It would be a nice way to discuss alternatives.

draft - reddit place -

"never forget what was stolen from us - r/save3rdpartyapps"

Should this area be larger? a larger amount of pixels? Shouldn't it take up more space on the canvas?

should we promote r/redditalternatives - lemmy, activitypub, kbin?

@Thomas_domville @alexhall Discord's splitting things into channels was almost certainly inspired by IRC, a much older and simpler but more versatile (and open source!) chat platform, where you can easily just create (and also easily leave if you're done with them) channels, which act as chat rooms. (Though Discord is somewhat different in that it treats channels by default as established infrastructure in a community (and essentially autojoins everyone to channels) while on IRC channels are unregistered by default, so channels are more flexible on IRC.)

For more in-depth sit-down conversations, yeah I agree that i also appreciate the reply threading that platforms like Mastodon and Reddit provide. (On Mastodon the threading isn't necessarily obvious, but I think some apps make it more apparent, such as Fedilab.)

As a sidenote I'd like to give a shout-out to some alternatives, especially in light of the problems with Reddit. Obviously there's , the classic chat platform where you can just join any network any network and start chatting on (mostly) any channel, which can each have its own organization (the way whole Discord servers do). Then there's a couple more platforms: , which is federated (though not via ActivityPub), and , which is not (but has a *very* Discord-like interface). And then there's the and , which (for what it's worth) I think have the same style of message threading that Reddit does.

Kbin, Lemmy, the landed gentry, and the rise of “threadiverse” - Reddit users, mods and entire sub-reddits are moving, migrating to fediverse sites like and . “…if they (Reddit) somehow cobble together enough moderators to keep going and people reluctantly stay there for a while, everybody will keep looking for alternatives.” privacy.thenexus.today/8-days-

Okey dokey. So, I'm looking at viable to replace what was providing for me & I'm currently at the initial information overload stage.

My current understanding is that Lemmy is associated with tankies & best avoided, but it's also the most developed option presently.

Kbin seems to me to be more of an upcoming star, but still lacks important features & an app.

What have been others' informed experiences?

@kreig I’ve been having a great time with Lemmy

Once I got an account setup on sh.itjust.works and downloaded the Lemmy app Mlem I’ve been having a great time! Feels pretty much like Apollo Reddit on my iOS device. 🥰

I fully admit to not understanding how to use kbin, this post seems good --

One question -- ok kbin seems part of the fediverse, but you need a kbin instance which is != your mastodon (yes, I know there's more types) instance, yes?

I've been on , , and for a day now and my early impressions for these are:

- Lemmy is the most stable and robust.
- Kbin is the best at showing you what you want to see.
- Squabbles has the most content.

If Kbin had an app that would probably put it in first place for me. For now, it's tied with Lemmy. I like the amount of easily accessible discussion on Squabbles, but it's impossible to filter through the noise.

Happy y'all!
