Just finished re-reading "Mage Provocateur" by @GlynnStewart, and not sure I noticed the tribute to @nlowell's Solar Clipper series the first time through, with a minor character called Ishmael:

* "Call me Ishmael"
* In a bazaar/flea-market
* Can recognise starship captains by their command presence
* Is distributing whelkies
