Sometimes I want a bash script that I can run from the command line, but also in a systemd service.
But in the systemd service I want the output that goes to stdout not going to the journal, but to a logfile. For that I wrote a little titbit that I explain here:

Je website heb je wellicht al langer geleden gebouwd of laten bouwen. In tussentijd heb je regelmatig iets aangepast; pagina’s en blogberichten toegevoegd of verwijderd en titels gewijzigd. De knoppen van je menu zijn ook niet meer zoals toen. De zoekmachines kunnen deze gewijzigde pagina’s niet zomaar terugvinden waardoor je bezoekers via de zoekresultaten op een “page not found”-pagina terecht kunnen komen.

You can even check `man stdin` and `man stdout` on most systems.

Anyway, since these are files, you can just chain them together. In Linux you're probably familiar with #redirection and #piping. > and | are the characters that you might have seen associated with them. But that's really just because they're ascii chars that were common enough on keyboards and kind of looked like the things we wanted to do.

Relevant side note: Did you know that ctrl+h is backspace? Try it in your terminal!

OK! Having now switched my account to a different server, my experience with #account #redirection:

* The built-in to/from stuff is easy. There's enough direction in context that it's clear what to do and it just works.
* ...which means it repoints your followers to new-you and posts a notification on your profile

But it _doesn't_ maintain:
* hashtags I follow
* filters
* people I'm following

The latter one I can do pretty fast with import/export, which keeps being available post-redirect. The former two stop being available once I've switched my account (the account goes into a vestigial mode where I can't access all the settings), so...copy those over in advance if you want them, I guess.

Turns out I had an old Mastodon account on mastodon.gamedev.place, created back in 2017! I've set it to move to this account.

I was honestly a little torn about which instance to call my home, but in the end the decision was simple: stick to the account where I've actually been posting. 😁
