It is nesting season for Red Kites. I have seen them flying with building materials in their mouths. As monogamous birds, mating pairs will return to the same nests each season, adding new material to them during the breeding period. Did you know they are attracted to bright colours too?

We have both #blackkites and #redkites which perch on the house or surrounding trees. Numbers vary from two in the winter, anywhere up to about 15 in the spring and summer, when the fields are being cut for hay, or neighbouring farm has fresh intake of free range #chickens or #guineafowl. This #blackkite could often be seen flying around the house, on the look out for a tasty morsel.

Fully zoomed with a 150-600mm lens on 2/3 crop dSLR from about 50 metres away. I was standing on the drove next to the field where a lot of the Red Kites, Milvus milvus, like to perch during the day.
Look at that bill! Perfect for feeding on carrion, small rodents, and earthworms...yes earthworms, especially during the mating season when that delicacy becomes almost their staple food.
